Summer of Content - Thursday September 7th
Well summer has passed us by somehow, and the new Welsh rugby season is already upon us. Bumper crowds and exciting games have given Welsh rugby a buzz that has been missing in recent years. You can sense, even before the leaves have fallen, that there's a feel-good factor abroad in Wales. The league is more competitive this year, there's more of an air of unpredictability. When Ponty beat Swansea first up, nobody was really that surprised, after all Ponty always have been the champion of the underdogs, especially in their own backyard. However, when Bridgend beat Llanelli with something to spare, and my own hometown club Neath come away from Cardiff feeling they should have won, you know it's going to be a good season. And it's not just the closely fought contests, it's the style of rugby that's being played. Both Neath and Bridgend have played exciting attacking rugby, and even Caerphilly have shown in their victory over Glasgow that the big guns can't afford to take them lightly.

Of course, it's not all sweetness and light. Welsh rugby just wouldn't be Welsh rugby without the obligatory crisis. The potential career-ending injury to Cross Keys fullback Ioan Bebb provides the first and has thrown the question of a citing procedure for foul play back into the melting pot. In the professional era, it is a question the Welsh Rugby Union need to address urgently.

And the second concerns the WRU's "guidelines" on the number of foreign (ie. non-welsh qualifed) players chosen in a club's squad. Newport issued a direct challenge to this by picking eight of them in their squad to fact Swansea last night (a game they went on to win). Even before the lawyers were wheeled out, the WRU was climbing down, admitting that they were in breach of European law, and insisting the rule was simply a guideline for the benefit of Welsh rugby. Whether that's the case or not remains to be seen. Newport argue that it can only be good for young Welsh players to learn the trade from their world-class foreign legion. I guess that's a valid point, but it does beg the question of how much these young players learn by sitting on the bench every week, while so much of the hard-earned revenue from Welsh rugby is being deposited in foreign bank accounts.
