FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ was developed to provide answers to some of the more common questions that have been asked of Gabrielle's parents. Please note, updates to this information are made from time to time.

What will force Gabrielle to need the kidney transplant?
Gabrielle's kidneys are currently functioning at an efficiency level of approximately 40%. In most cases, kidney function depreciates gradually on an incremental basis, however, a small number of cases including Gabrielle experience plateaus (or prolonged periods of stabilazation in kidney function). While neither case is good, the promising sign is that the level of kidney function is not falling at a dramatic rate which in turn affords Gabrielle the time to develop and build the strength necessary to deal with the transplant surgery. The optimal age for transplantation in young children is 3 years of age.

The transplant process will begin when End State Renal Disease (ESRD)sets in (kidney function falling to 10% of normal functionality). Gabrielle's kidney's will be removed and peritoneal dialysus will be initiated from home on a daily basis for approximately 2 months after which time the transplant surgery will take place. Transplant procedures are only performed between the months of April and October due to various health related issues associated with cold and flu season. This constraint would not affect the removal of Gabrielle's kidneys should End State Renal Disease set in during the winter months.

What is the likely timeframe for the surgery?
See above

How many kidney's will she receive at that time?
One Kidney which will provided by Nadine (she is the #1 candidate and currently undergoing testing for donor compatibility).

How long will Gabrielle be in the hospital?
Gabrielle will be in the hospital approximately 2 - 4 weeks depending on the outcome of the surgery. Upon discharge, she will return twice weekly for evaluations for a period of 2 - 3 months. Follow up visits will decrease over time depending on numerous factors determining the level of success of the transplant surgery.

Is Gabrielle on the kidney transplant list?
No. As it currently stands, the organ needs will be met by the family. However, should addition to a transplant list be required, then action could not take place until Gabrielle reached ESRD.

Where will the transplant surgery take place?
Boston Children's Hospital in Boston Massachusetts

Will Gabrielle ever need another transplant?
More than likely, yes. A Kidney received from living donor generally lasts 15 - 20 years which doing the math, clearly shows that 2- 3 might be required over the course of a full lifetime. However, recent advances in treatments and potential for future breakthroughs in such areas as organ cloning give hope that the landscape will have much different look when that time arrives.

How much does a kidney transplant cost?
The transplant surgery itself (inclusive of the donor surgery, the recipient transplant surgery & hospital costs) will approach $150,000.00. Anti-Rejection Therapy, which will be required for the remainder of Gabrielle's life is currently around $15,000 annually.

What are the current fundraising goals?
Our goal for 2000 is to raise $100,000.00.
