Misconceptions from stereotypes

1) “Islamic law is barbaric and cruel”

When this statement is made, the people are usually talking about the cutting off of limbs (hands, feet) and stoning.

A. These punishments do not occur as often as the people who make the statement imagine. In fact, they are meant to be practiced against serious offenders such as people who commit repetitive crimes. Thieves are the main ones who endure such punishment and they are not just petty thieves who steal food or clothing.

B. There are exemptions, for example:

Let’s say a person is working for someone who has not paid him or her their wages and ignoring responsibilities toward him. So, the worker decides to steal money, food, clothing to support him and family. Then he gets caught. All the information is collected and considered, either the worker is punished or the officials work something out with the employer. All matters should be taken into consideration and of course… all decisions should be acceptable in Islam. Whatever the crime may be, each case is different. Therefore all criminals must suffer the punishment that fits the crime.

2) “Muslims don’t like to follow american democratic system because they like to oppress people”

This is a serious misconception. Islamic law is the best form of law because it does not oppress in any way. It is fair in every way. Muslims believe that laws should come from Allah (God). Muslims should believe and have trust in Islamic laws because they are created by Allah and sent to us in the holy Quran.

A. people deciding what should be law is wrong. We all know that it is a fact that Everyone has different opinions and morals right? Well, under an american democratic system the people are the ones who get to vote and decide which laws are to be followed.

B. I have a question for you: what will happen if a law is made and there are many who do not agree with the law?

My answer is: the people hate the law and many violate it and then guess what.. The crime rate goes up!

C. Islamic law is stable, when I say that I mean that it is unchanging. We can’t change the laws which Allah has created for us, do this is a sin.

D. One more question: why should people be enabled to decide punishments and laws using their judgments instead of the judgment of their creator which was mentioned in the quran and hadith?
