A lot of people in this world who have heard about the
religion of Islam have many misconceptions about Muslim people and the religion
itself. I believe that we, as humans have a tendency to prejudge by nature, but
some people take their prejudices too far!
The religion of Islam oppresses its women”
I’ve heard a lot of non-Muslim women
say that Muslim women are oppressed because they have to cover themselves. They also say that it is not fair that the women only get half of
inheritances of what a man gets.
"covering yourself is extremism"
Muslim women believe in dressing modestly and covering themselves. It is mentionedin the holy Quran for all believing women to do so. A woman’s naked
body is an object that only a husband’s eyes should see however is is permissable for her to uncover her hair in front of her father,brothers and female members of the family. my opinion is: if a woman shows
all her beauty to the public, she will soon feel that it is ok to share even the most intimate details that occur in the home.
I believe that Muslim
women who cover, get more respect from the men surrounding them. I also believe
that Islam is a religion of protection for its women. It is also a
religion of Prevention. If you consider it extreme to follow Allah's commandments, then yes, it is extreme.
"Inheritence laws are unfair"
Islam says the greater share of inheritance is given to men because of the amount
of responsibility he has. It is a requirement for the men to spend their
inheritance on the entire family by supporting them. The Muslim man is
responsible for the needs of the whole family, this includes: his wife,
children, mother, and brothers and sisters. this is quite fair.
no other religion mentions women being owed anything from inheritance.
Some non-Muslim families do give their women parts of inheritance, but
their religion does not say they must.
The Muslim woman deserves her portion and is not required to share it with
anyone; she can keep it and spend it however she wants.

Muslim men have “a bunch of wives”
That is not true at all. The fact is,
Islam does allow AS MANY AS four wives.
Islam did not bring polygamy; it was already here. What Allah did when he
sent this law was, put a limit on what was already going on.
In most cases, all wives aren’t treated equally; therefore, multiple
marriages don’t take place as often as you think. Islam says that wives MUST get an equal or at least fair
amount of time with the husband. In my opinion, this is almost impossible and
sounds very tiring. lol Imagine having to deal with four different personalities in
the same way.
“Muslim men don't respect women”
I believe this statement is somewhat true,
when it comes to Muslim men respecting “Western” non-Muslim women.
There have been some (Arab) Muslims that
have come to the United States with the idea that most American women are
exactly what are portrayed in the movies. The movies that they have seen have
shown women in Western society as loose in moral character and open to anything.
Most of the movies have shown women easily going with men if they have money or
simply a nice car. I believe that if Muslim men have a bad image about Western
women, but they did not come to this conclusion on their own.It is the westerners that have
created the image themselves!
“Middle-Eastern
Muslims are all rich”
Well…. Surprise!! Not all Muslims from the
Middle East are wealthy. In fact, the majority of the Middle Eastern Muslim men
that are living in the U.S. are either students on academic scholarships or
business men trying to make their dream of becoming successful a “dream come
true”. Not all are the lucky inheritors of the oil that exists in some of the
Middle Eastern countries. The fact of the oil is there does not mean the people
have an oil well in their back yard that they can just dip into at any given
time!
“Islam is only for Arabs”
This is a ridiculous statement. All you have
to do is take a look around,and you will see that there are Muslims all over the
world! In fact, last time i checked there were only about 100 million Arab Muslims and over 900
million non Arab Muslims. A lot of people assume there are only Arab Muslims
because they heard that the origin of Islam is Arabia. What about Christianity?
Where did it begin? In America…. No!
“Islam is only
for black people”
I believe the people that get this
idea have only been exposed to the media talking about people like Elijah
Mohammed and Louis Farrakhan. Let me be the one to tell you that I do not
consider these people to be Muslims. The reason being that: most of their
teachings are not from the holy Quran. They are known for teaching separatism
among races and other non- Quranic teachings which have caused many senseless
acts of violence while hiding behind the name of Islam.
Islam has a rainbow of races, alhamdulillah!
