You may be wondering what this choreography page is all about. Well, a couple of weeks ago, we had to pick out a career to make a fake brochure on. I chose choreographer. Since I've gotten a few questions on choreographing, I thought I would list the info out of my brochure on here. You might find it interesting!

Work Description

  • Creates original dances, movements, and gestures, then teaches them to performers.
  • Schedules rehearsals.
  • Instructs performers to achieve effect.
  • Composes dances to portray a story, enhance musical production, or mirror emotion.
  • May perform on stage.

    Working Conditions

  • In a theater, rehearsing in a studio, and performing on stage.
  • Strenuous physical activity.
  • Rehearsals may require long hours.
  • Some risk of injury.

    Personal Characteristics

    Personal characteristics needed for a choreographer would be the following: devotion to dance, creativity, imagination, sense of rhythm, coordination, agility, grace, physical strength, stamina, perseverance, verbal ability, flexibility, and detail-mindedness.

    Education & Training

    A college degree in dance and/or choreographyis recommended but not always required. Also taken classes in physical education, dance, theater, music, public speaking, art, and English.

    Job Outlook

    The job outlook for choreography is steady but keen. In Washington state, dance is increasing fast and should increase 35% by the year 2006.

    Salary Range

    The salary range is $15,000 or less to $25,000 or more per year depending on employer, location, and experience. Income may be sporadic, so a part-time job outside the dance profession may be necessary to supplement income.

    Lifestyle Implications

    Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required for rehearsals and performances with little time for personal leisure and hobbies.

    You can start by taking dance classes of all kinds. Make sure stay in shape. Talk to a choreographer or dance instructor in your area and learn how to make up dances.
