Bytes and Bits.

by: Wenlock Burton.

Hi, and welcome to the first of ICDX's new computer column called Bytes and Bits. We will be featuring tips and tricks as well as reviews and answer a few questions on a regular basis.

Tips and Tricks.

Tip of the month this month is a way to search for a file. Ever had that pain in the nether regions caused by putting a file somewhere on your hard disk then can't remember where in Cyberspace you left it? (Ok, I know you didn't leave it in Cyberspace, unless maybe you can afford an Internet account). Well apart from finding (or even buying) a program like WHEREIS.COM, here's a simple way to do it in batch mode in MSDOS. This command will also search CD-ROMs and networked drives.

C:>DIR /R /S | FIND "FILE" (simply replace FILE with the string you wish

to find, i.e. DXLOG and all files with DXLOG

anywhere in the filename will be displayed).

Note that it doesn't support wildcards (*.*, *.BAT etc) but you can get the same effect by using BAT to find all .BAT files etc.

This works with DOS6.0 upwards however the older versions can still be made to search with this command:

C:>CHKDSK /V | FIND "FILE" (unlike using DIR this cannot search network

drives or CD-ROMs)

Keeping that Log.

Now I know many of us keep logs on a wordprocessor such is Wordperfect or MSWord. But have you considered using a logkeeping program? Or maybe a Database program. Obviously setting up a Database can be a bit involved so the easiest way is a logkeeper. Few are written for TV/FM DX but no doubt some of the more multifunctional Ham radio loggers can be used. There are number of ways to find them, as most are "Shareware" you can get them from Bulletin Boards, CD-ROM discs, and Shareware vendors at the SwapMeets around town..

Here's some names to look for: SPLOG HAMLOG

Well that rounds up Bytes and Bits for the first month, if you'd like to see anything here which interests you and may be of interest to others please send your comments to me. Also if you can help out with info for other computers (Mac, Amiga, etc) please send info , Thanks.
