Clocks
Clocks are often a thing of the past on TV stations, in Australia it was mostly ABC-TV and country stations who used them, but that's not to say you wouldn't have seen one in the city! I miss them as a public service, they let you know the time, and to some the appearance of the clock may even be a reassurance that the station knew the time and kept everything on time. Sometimes they carried advertising slogans, but mostly they carried a brief program menu. A program menu by itself is more flexible, clocks are usually shown at an important time, such as just before the 6:00 news.
The Clocks
ABC-TV/ABC National TV.
Usually listing the next few programmes or promoting an upcoming special, the ABC clock only change marginally over the years, it faded away in the 80s, but that doesn't preclude it from appearing again. Used mainly at the start of programmes, last thing at night, just before the News and between Schools programmes, it was a fairly common sight once.
Commercials.
There's more to see here, of course, the clock lasted
much longer in the country than the city, in fact some city
stations possibly never used a clock. Or, at least, not on
air.
Again
from Robert, NBN 3 just after the start of colour, sorry there
was only b&w film in the camera. The original
version of The Aeroplane Jelly song often accompanied this clock.
Local reception of NEN 9 Tamworth NSW photographed by Robert, while on a two week holiday in the New England District in NSW, in September 1968. In later years, this station joined the Great Eastland Television (GET) Network with ECN 8 Taree NSW. These days, they are part of the Prime NSW Network.
NWS 9
Adelaide SA sent Robert a photo of their clock back in June 1972, looks a
little chilly today :-).
Ah,
now that's colour! BKN 7 Broken Hill from Graham Dawe's videotape.
It was more common in the 1970's & 1980s to carry advertising on the clock.
SAS 10 Adelaide, one city station that did use a clock, this is before SAS and ADS swapped over, no doubt confusing Adelaide residents somewhat.
