The aim of this series:

“Then He said to them, ‘O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?’ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Luke 24:25-27.

Genesis 6

The Flood

I guess its only natural that we should now progress to the Flood.

***************

Genesis 6:1-3

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose [the church people mingling with the world precipitated the crisis].

And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days [of warning] shall be a hundred and twenty years."

***************

We can be sure that many at first appeared to receive the warning through fear of what was coming on the earth. Yet they did not turn to God with true repentance, for they were unwilling to renounce their sins. During the time that elapsed before the coming of the Flood, their faith was tested, and they failed to endure the trial. Overcome by the prevailing unbelief, they finally joined their former associates in rejecting the solemn message.

Others were deeply convicted, and would have heeded the words of warning; but there were so many who laughed and ridiculed that they joined the rest, resisted the invitations of mercy, and were soon among the boldest and most defiant scoffers; for none are so reckless and go to such lengths in sin as do those who have once had light, but have resisted the convicting Spirit of God. Matthew 12:43-45.

The Christians of the day helped Noah of course, for this ship was big. Two hundred metres long [649ft], just over thirty metres wide [97.5ft], and twenty metres tall [65ft], it was a good size even by today’s standards.

[The largest passenger ship today is the QE2 which is 963ft long, 105ft wide and 32ft underwater. She carries 2,915 people and displaces over 70,000 tons. The aircraft carriers of the Nimitz class are 1030ft long, 132ft wide, displacing 102,000 tons and carrying around 6,000 people. The maximum size of a cargo ship that could pass through the Panama Canal would be 955ft long, by 104ft wide.]

With no engines or fuel tanks, the ark was easily capable of housing all the creatures that answered God’s call to safety, especially so when we remember that the vast majority of animals are dog size or smaller.  You can count the number of the large animals on your fingers.

Even one hundred and twenty years of warning and pleading did no good. During this time Noah matched his actions to his words and built the ark, but he was only laughed at by the majority because there had never been any rain before in all of human history. See Genesis 2:5-6. Water out of the sky was impossible, the rejecters thought.

As time passed on, with no apparent change in nature, men and women whose hearts had at times trembled with fear, began to be reassured. They reasoned, as many reason now, that nature is above the God of nature, and that her laws are so firmly established that God Himself could not change them. Reasoning that if the message of Noah were correct, nature would be turned out of her course, they made that message, in the minds of the world, a delusion – a grand deception. The people agreed that if there were any truth in what Noah had said, the men of renown, the scientists of the day, would understand the matter and harmonise with him.

They showed their contempt for the pleas made by a loving Saviour by doing just as they had done before the warning was given. (See Ezekiel 18:31-32). They continued their festivities and their gluttonous feasts; they ate and drank, planted and built, laying their plans in reference to advantages they hoped to gain in the future. Matthew 24:37-39. And they went to greater lengths in wickedness, and in defiant disregard of God's requirements, to testify that they had no fear of the Infinite One.

Had the pre-Flood generations believed the warning, and repented of their evil deeds, the LORD would have been able to continue His protection, as He afterward did for Nineveh. Jonah 3:3-10. But by their obstinate resistance to the pricks of conscience and the warnings of God's prophets, that generation filled up the measure of their iniquity, and became ripe for self-destruction.

Genesis 6:4

There were giants in the earth in those days.

***************

The early humans were a lot taller than we are now, for sin affects everything, including our body height. But Goliath and his brothers (and some basketball players today) show us what they could have been like. Goliath was "six cubits and a span" high which means that he was about 9ft 6ins tall using the 18 inch cubit!! 1 Samuel 17:4; 2 Samuel 21:18-20.

***************

Genesis 6:4

And also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

***************

With the strength of their fathers and the cunning of the mothers they were indeed the most significant rebels of the time. This is one of the reasons God says not to integrate. 2 Corinthians 6:17-18. The heartache of the godly parent when the children ran wild must have been immense.

***************

Genesis 6:5-9

And [the Son of] God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually [This meant that Jesus could no longer protect men and women from their actions]. And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and IT GRIEVED HIM AT HIS HEART [this part is often forgotten but He is a parent too].

And the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents Me that I have made them." [Does God make mistakes? I have dealt with HOW the Son of God (who was their Father) destroyed them in another posting.]

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD [yet God has no favourites!].

These are the generations [or beginnings] of Noah.

***************

Noah "found grace" because he accepted it. He was the only one left at the end of the one hundred and twenty years who still listened to God. Every other "Christian" was now dead, but he would not give up his trust in his Saviour. Even Methuselah (the longest lived man and Noah’s grandfather) died just before the Flood came! Noah’s father, Lamech, had died a few years before his own father, Methuselah.

Enoch, Noah’s great grandfather had been taken to heaven without dying, but this lesson had been lost by then as it has today.

***************

Genesis 6:9-17

Noah was a just [justified] man and perfect in his generations [for his time], and Noah walked with God. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. [It is true that the Scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35), but we must know HOW Jesus destroyed them!]

"Make you an ark of gopher wood; rooms shall you make in the ark, and shall pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which you shall make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits [about 600ft], the breadth of it fifty cubits [100ft], and the height of it thirty cubits [60ft]. A window shall you make to the ark, and in a cubit shall you finish it above; and the door of the ark shall you set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shall you make it.

[All it had to do was float so there was no need for a mast or rudder etc.]

"And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die." [Jesus takes the blame because He put in place the laws, which, being broken, caused the earth to be flooded].

If case any one is interested I have posted in a separate file an article on the connection between the Flood and the fly sprays of today which helps to explain Christ’s statement.

***************

Genesis 6:18

"But with you [Noah] will I establish My covenant [he was the only just one left]; and you shall come into the ark, you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

***************

These others were protected and led by the Christian’s gift of grace. This is the principle:- "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy." 1 Corinthians 7:14. To see one example of how this works read "Christiana’s Progress", the sequel to "Pilgrim’s Progress", by John Bunyan.

***************

Genesis 6:19-22

"And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shall you bring into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort SHALL COME TO YOU, to keep them alive. And take you to you of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to you; and it shall be for food for you, and for them."

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

***************

Put simply, it was Noah’s obedience that saved him. He did what he was told and therefore was safely in the ark when the Flood came. The members of his family were also physically saved because they followed him. And did you notice that the animals did too? Noah did not have to round them up. Angels went out to every animal and "asked" them to be saved, then led them two by two to the ark, which in itself was a marvellous sign to the unbelievers.

Here is probably a good place to think about the dinosaurs which were supposedly wiped out by a large meteor hitting the earth millions of years ago! If we discount that evolutionary theory, and realise that species are going extinct all the time, some due to circumstances and others because of man’s intervention, but all as a result of sin, we can come to a different conclusion.

Since the flood, there has been many amalgamations of beasts, as may be seen in the almost endless varieties of species of animals, and also in the range of races of men as we discussed a couple of weeks ago. The genetic pools of all creatures allow for many variations by natural selection, especially when inbreeding occurs, but there are limits. Every species of animals which God had created was preserved in the ark. The confused species that God did not create, which were the result of mutations, natural and manmade, were destroyed by the flood because they were not obedient to God’s request to board the ark. Their bones, and the way they are scattered in the earth, bear mute testimony to that. (We can see more on this subject later.)

See you all next week.

Ezekiel 18:31-32

Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby you have transgressed; and make [receive] you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dies, says the LORD GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live you.  Back

Jonah 3:1-10

And the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that I bid you."

So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey [through all of its streets]. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and [as he went] he cried, and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes [they were all under the conviction of the Holy Spirit].

And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, "Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we perish not?" [What He sent was a warning, not an intention, but they did not know that.]

And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do to them; and He did it not [because now He was able to make His protection even stronger]Back
