The Ten Promises made by

the (School) Master and LORD (Protector)

repeated by Moses

The text is from the KJV but modernised for easier reading

John 13:13
You call Me Master and Lord: and you say well; for so I am.

The promises are :- "you shall not" = "you will not want to", not, "you must not"

Deuteronomy 5:1-22

And Moses called all Israel, and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and keep, and do them.

The LORD our God made a covenant [agreement] with us in Horeb [Mt Sinai]. The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day. The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire, (I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to show you the word of the LORD: for you were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

You shall have none other gods before Me.

You shall not make you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: you shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me, and showing mercy to thousands of them that love Me and keep My commandments.

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes His name in vain.

Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your ox, nor your ass, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates; that your manservant and your maidservant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Honour your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you; that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

You shall not kill.

Neither shall you commit adultery.

Neither shall you steal.

Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbour.

Neither shall you desire your neighbour's wife, neither shall you covet your neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is your neighbour's.

These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and He added no more. And He wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them to me.

What Jesus promised was: "You step out in faith, following My word, and I'll supply the power". That's what happened when they came to the Red Sea under His guidance! Exodus 14.

Exodus 14:13-14

And Moses said to the people, Fear you not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will show to you today: for the Egyptians [or the temptations] whom you have seen to day, you shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.

That vast, helpless throng - bondmen [slaves] unused to battle, women, children, and cattle, with the sea before them, and the mighty armies of Egypt pressing behind - had seen their path opened through the waters and their enemies overwhelmed in the moment of expected triumph. Jehovah alone had brought them deliverance, and to Him their hearts were turned in gratitude and faith. Their emotion found utterance in songs of praise. The Spirit of God rested upon Moses, and he led the people in a triumphant anthem of thanksgiving, the earliest and one of the most sublime that are known to man.

"I will sing to Jehovah, for He has triumphed gloriously;

The horse and his rider has He thrown into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my song,

And He is become my salvation:

This is my God, and I will praise Him;

My father's God, and I will exalt Him.

The Lord is a man of war:

Jehovah is His name.

Pharaoh's chariots and his host has He cast into the sea:

And his chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea.

The deeps cover them:

They went down into the depths like a stone.

Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power,

Your right hand, O Lord, dashes in pieces the enemy. . . .

Who is like to You, O Lord, among the gods?

Who is like You, glorious in holiness,

Fearful in praises, doing wonders? . . .

You in Your mercy have led the people which You have redeemed:

You have guided them in Your strength to Your holy habitation.

The peoples have heard, they tremble. . . .

Terror and dread fall upon them;

By the greatness of Your arm they are as still as a stone;

Till Your people pass over, O Lord,

Till the people pass over which You have purchased.

You shall bring them in, and plant them

in the mountain of Your inheritance,

The place, O Lord, which You have made for You to dwell in."

Exodus 15:1-17, R.V.

Like the voice of the great deep, rose from the vast hosts of Israel that sublime ascription. It was taken up by the women of Israel, Miriam, the sister of Moses, leading the way, as they went forth with timbrel and dance. Far over desert and sea rang the joyous refrain, and the mountains re-echoed the words of their praise - "Sing you to Jehovah, for He has triumphed gloriously."

This song and the great deliverance which it commemorates, made an impression never to be effaced from the memory of the Hebrew people. From age to age it was echoed by the prophets and singers of Israel, testifying that Jehovah is the strength and deliverance of those who trust in Him.

That song does not belong to the Jewish people alone. It points forward to the destruction of all the foes of righteousness and the final victory of the Israel of God. The prophet of Patmos beholds the white-robed multitude that have "gotten the victory," standing on the "sea of glass mingled with fire," having "the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb." Revelation 15:2, 3. [PP 288-289]
