John 11:1-46
The sickness of Lazarus John 11:1-4
1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) 3 Therefore his sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick". 4 When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto [permanent] death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby."
Jesus delayed His return John 11:5-10
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He abode two days still in the same place where He was. 7 Then after that said He to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea again". 8 His disciples said to Him, "Master, the Jews of late sought to stone You; and go You there again?"
9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world [that is, If he obeys God and does His work he will not be harmed].
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him".
The truth of the matter John 11:11-16
11 These things said He: and after that He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep". 12 Then said his disciples, "Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well". 13 However Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, "Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe [in My REAL power]; nevertheless let us go to him".
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus [or twin], to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him".
A belief in the resurrection John 11:17-23
17 Then when Jesus came, He found that he had lain in the grave four days already. 18 Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off, 19 and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him: but Mary sat still in the house. 21 Then said Martha to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother had not died. 22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever You will ask of God, God will give it [to] You". 23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother shall rise again".
Why wait? John 11:24-25
24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day". 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live [today]".
A deeper belief John 11:26
26 "And whosoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Believe you this?"
Martha didn’t understand fully John 11:27-31
27 She said to Him, "Yes, Lord: I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world". 28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, "The Master is come, and calls for you". 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came to Him. 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met Him. 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, "She goes to the grave to weep there".
Thought His physical presence was needed John 11:32
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother had not died".
This misunderstanding hurt Jesus John 11:33-34
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, He groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see".
Such a truth! So misunderstood! John 11:35-37
35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, "Behold how He loved him!" 37 And some of them said, "Could not this Man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?"
The agony of God John 11:38-42
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in Himself came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, "Take you away the stone". Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days". 40 Jesus said to her, "Said I not to you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?" 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I knew that You hear Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that You have sent Me".
The dead can hear the voice of God John 11:43-46
43 And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth". 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go". 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

One place for all Ecclesiastes 9:3-6
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event [death] to all. Yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead [or grave].
4 For [or but] to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Humanity and beasts Ecclesiastes 3:18-21
18 I
said in my heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that
God might manifest them, and that they might see that they
themselves are beasts. 19 For that which befalls the sons of men befalls
beasts; even one thing befalls them: as the one dies, so dies the
other. Yes, they have all one breath; so that a man has no
pre-eminence above a beast: for all is vanity. 20 All go to
one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knows [that] the spirit of man goes upward [to heaven],
and [that] the spirit of the beast goes downward to the
earth?

The Son of God has power John 5:25-27
25 Verily, verily, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now is [Mat. 27:52-53], when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself; 27 And has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man.
Two different resurrections John 5:28-29
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is [also] coming, in the which ALL that are in the graves shall hear His voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation.

Christianity is based on the resurrection 1 Corinthians 15:12-23
12 Now if Christ be preached that He rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ: whom He raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised. 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; you are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming…

At the last trump 1 Corinthians 15:51-54
51 Behold,
I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be
changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the
last trump.
For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised
incorruptible, and we [who
are alive at that time] shall be
changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption,
and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this
corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall
have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying
that is written [in Isaiah
25:8], "Death is swallowed
up in victory".
Death defeated - when? 1 Corinthians 15:55-58
55 O
death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? 56 The sting [or cause] of
death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law [See Romans 6:23].
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be you steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding
in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as you know that your labour
is not in vain in the Lord.

A message of comfort 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [or precede] them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

A confession Isaiah 26:17-18
17 "Like as a woman with child, that draws near
the time of her delivery, is in pain, and cries out in her pangs;
so have we been in Your sight, O LORD.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain,
[yet] we have as it were brought forth [only]
wind. We have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither
have the inhabitants of the world fallen".
The answer Isaiah 26:19-21
19 "Your dead men shall live, together with My
dead body shall they arise. [See Matthew 27:52-53 again]. ‘Awake and sing, you that dwell in dust’ [I will cry],
for your dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out
the dead".
20 "Come, My people, enter you into your chambers, and shut your doors about you: hide yourself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast". 21 For, behold, the LORD comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
