Satriani has mellowed. Listen to any track on Strange Beautiful Music, and without a single doubt, you'll draw that conclusion. But then again, who would expect anything less than that from something from something with THAT title?
He's even gone a bit Jazzy. Listen to track 6, Sleep Walk, and you'll hear it. But really, who's complaining? Amazingly enough, the tempo of this album is slow, mellow, relaxing - something truly different. Sure, a few tracks is a bit on the faster side, but the guy can't keep the slow pace throughout the whole thing, right? But generally, nothing as heavy and as fast paced as his old albums, namely things like Crystal Planet (Remember Raspberry Jam Delta-V?). And I'm not complaing. After being dosed with his old albums Engines of Creation, Crystal Planet, and after recently getting his 2-disc Live in San Fransisco, where he made EVERY track heavy (including the sweet and mellow LOVE THING!), I was actually beginning to doubt as to how versatile Satriani really was.
Basically speaking, I love this album. Jazzy and mellow at times, yet not slow enough to put you to sleep; The trademark Striani fast note progressions, yet somehow slow enough to keep the mildness of the track (go listen to Track 2 - Belly Dancer). True emotion in the few most amazing tracks of the CD - namely What Breaks a Heart, and Chords of Life. If you don't listen to anything else, get the album just for those two. But that's not to say the others are not worth mentioning, those two just stand out the most. And for those thinking that the album can go on your not to be bought list jsut because it's slow paced and mellow, think again. The tracks like The Journey and Mind Storm are enough to keep you awake in the middle of it all.
