The article describes the Symantec company cryptoutility, its functions, and characteristics of the realised Blowfish algorithm.
Norton Secret Stuff, version 1.0, copyright dated by 1997 year, in literal translation - Norton's clandestine materials, the general purpose utility for the files encipher for the work under the Windows. It has freeware status, accessible on the Symantec site: http://www.symantec.com. The package consists of 16-bit executable exe-program with size 601 K, help file in English with size 17 K and two text files license.txt, readme.txt. Norton Secret Stuff, версия 1.0, копирайт датирован 1997 годом , в дословном переводе – нортоновские секретные материалы, утилита шифрования файлов общего назначения для работы под Windows. Имеет статус freeware, доступна с сайта Symantec: http://www.symantec.com. Пакет состоит из исполнимого 16-битного exe-файла размером 601 К, файла помощи на английском языке размером 17 К и двух текстовых файлов license.txt, readme.txt.

  1. There is the the DOS-executable on the output, which is self-extracting archive, that can be launched not only under Windows, but under MS DOS either. Before self-inflating the file requests the ealier input password.

  1. Before the enciphering the utility compresses (squeezes) data to decrease the size of the file with enciphered information on the output and to increase of the durability to the breaking.

  1. The presence of the installed NSS is not necessary to unpack the enciphered self-extracting archive, but the very file and the knowledge of the password.

  1. The password can have from 3 to 50 symbols. The range of the allowed symbols includes letters, digits, spaces and any symbols, accessible from keyboard input. Typed password is sensible to the keyboard case shift-key. On the password typing and confirmation, after button "Encrypt" pressing, the program requests the name of the executable file, which will contain the protected information.

Вводимый пароль чувствителен к смене регистра клавиатуры. После введения пароля и его подтверждения, после нажатия кнопки "Encrypt" (зашифровать), программа запросит имя исполнимого файла, который будет содержать в себе защищенную информацию.
  1. The used algorithm for encryption is 32-bit Blowfish. According to the contemporary standard 32 bits are obviously not enough for the strong encryption, the needed minimum recommended by experts is 56 bit. Therefore this utility cannot be considered as serious means for the critical data protection.

  1. One archive can contain up to the 2000 files of any format.

  1. The operations with folders or wildcards (like *.* or ????.txt) are not supported. Each file must be separately selected by the opening the dialog box and cliking the button "Add".

The protected channel is to be created for the bilateral keys (passwords) passing to exchange effectively with the enciphered data between the addressees, on the other hand, the passwords must be transfered using another reliable way. Or the key generation protocol is to be worked out, which is to be known only to the recipients of the enciphered messages. Для эффективного обмена зашифрованными данными между адресатами потребуется организовать защищенный канал для передачи ключей (паролей), другими словами пароли должны передаваться каким-либо другим надежным способом. Или придется разработать протокол генерации ключей, который должен будет известен только получателям зашифрованных сообщений.
