Song Birds
We are still mourning the loss of Ann Young, Bird Lady of Altamonte Springs, Florida, as well as Lee Harr, rehabilitator of the Conway, Florida, area. While we can never replace them, we must attempt to continue the work that these two ladies performed as a tribute to them and for the sake of the wild animals so desperately needing care. We are so very pleased to introduce you to a volunteer new to our Center, but one who worked under the tutelage of Ann Young for some time, caring for injured and orphaned song birds. The "new" volunteer is Carole Counts of Winter Park, Florida, and this year, she allowed us to add her name to our official list with the Florida Fish and Game Conservation Commission. Carole has set up several areas in her home to accommodate the care of the birds and is in the process of adding a few outdoor enclosures. We wish to thank Diana Flynt of the Birds of Prey Center for helping with this project. Although I grew up helping my mom raise orphaned song birds, for many years, I have specialized more in the rehabilitation of mammals. After all, Ann Young was the bird lady, and I could always rely on her to be there for the birds. Then, without warning, Ann was gone, and a huge rift seemed unfillable. Although we have not replaced Ann, and we shall never be able to do so, we do have a volunteer who has committed t6 give it her best. Carole truly loves the songbirds, and, thanks to Ann Young, has the knowledge to provide excellent care. |
