Kotova, Wyatt, Dailer Win Top WVIAC Women's Basketball Awards
February 26, 2001

(PRINCETON, WV)---West Liberty State junior center Jaana Kotova has been selected as the West Virginia Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year by a vote of the league’s coaches. Bluefield State point guard Tracy Wyatt is the pick for Freshman of the Year, and Davis & Elkins’ Jay Dailer has been tabbed by his peers as the conference’s Coach of the Year.

Kotova, a 6-11 junior from Tallinn, Estonia, currently leads the nation and has already established a West Liberty school record with 128 blocks this season. She is currently averaging 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds for the regular season champion Lady Toppers. The nation’s tallest women’s collegiate player also made a WVIAC-best 61.5% of her field goals and recorded ten double-doubles on the campaign. Kotova, a transfer from Seminole Community College, ended the regular season as the league’s fifth leading scorer and was fourth in rebounding.

“Jaana carried us early with a young team,” said WLSC head coach Lynn Ullom. “She did a tremendous job of playing within the confines of a team. Jaana was tremendous scoring inside and provided great interior defense with her shot blocking ability.”

Wyatt enjoyed a successful freshman campaign after completing a high school career that saw her Mercer Christian teams win three straight WVSSAC Class A titles. The 5-7 Princeton native led all WVIAC freshman in scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (6.0). Wyatt helped the Lady Blues compile a 10-8 league mark by scoring in double figures in 22 of 26 contests. She also closed with a flourish by scoring 20 or more points in her final three outings.

“This is a great honor for Tracy because of the number of quality freshmen in the league this year,” stated BSC head coach John O’Neal. “She had a few tough games early as she adjusted to the physical play at this level. Tracy came on strong in the second half as everyone on our team adjusted to their roles and became more comfortable. She has played better and better as the season has gone on.”

Dailer has engineered a gigantic turnaround at Davis & Elkins. The Lady Senators have compiled a 13-12 record as they finished with a winning regular season mark for the first time since 1985-86. The 1973 WVU grad and Wheeling native is in his second season at the helm of the Lady Senators after a long tenure at the head coach of the Elkins High School boys and girls squads. He also spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the D&E men’s program. Dailer is currently 18-34 during his stint as the mentor for the Lady Senators.
