DR. SNAVELY,
EDUCATOR,
DIES AT HOME
Dr. Charles Snavely, 82 professor of history and political science at Otterbein College from 1900 until his retirement in 1940, died Sunday at his home, 40 N. Grove St.
Dr. Snavely, a Democrat, was mayor of Westerville from 1905 to 1907 and a member of the City Council from 1909 to 1934 and he was later chairman of City Council under the present city manager plan of government.
He graduated from Otterbein College in 1894 and received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 1902.
In 1904 on his 75th birthday, Dr. Snavely was honored at a special chapel assembly of Otterbein College upon his retirement after 40 years of service with the faculty.
He was a member of Westerville's First Evangelical United Brethren church and the Central Ohio Schoolmasters' Club.
Dr. Snavely is survived by a son, Robert Snavely, Westerville; two daughters, the Misses Marian and Virginia Snavely, both at home; and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Mumms, Westerville; and two granddaughters. His wife died in 1938.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Evangelical United Brethren Church. Entombment was in Otterbein Mausoleum by the Fichner Funeral Home.
Rev. Millard J. Miller was in charge of the funeral service assisted by President J. Gordon Howard and his father, Dr. A. T. Howard, of Dayton, a classmate of Dr. Snavely, and Prof. Horace W. Troop, who also spoke. Prof. G. G. Grabill presided at the organ.
Before he became ill in April he had been working on a history of the government of Westerville and spent many hours searching through copies of the Public Opinion in his office.
