JESSIE MAE BOOKMAN
Dec. 2, 1872 - July 22, 1944

RITES WERE TUESDAY
FOR MRS. BOOKMAN

She Had Been in Failing Health
for Several Months

Following an illness over a period of several months, Mrs. Jessie Mae McCrary Bookman, age 71, wife of Frank Bookman, president of the Westerville Citizens Bank, died Saturday afternoon in Grant Hospital where she was removed on the previous Thursday. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, in the Methodist church, with her pastor, Rev. Donald W. Cryer, in charge.
A woman of sterling qualities, she was highly respected by everyone in this community where she spent her entire life. Before she was married she taught school at Lewis Center, the Jack Smith school and the School House Lane school. The McCrary homestead when she was married was located about a half mile east of the present Grace Chapel Community church in Genoa Township. Her birthplace was in the house which stood where the Parks Service Station is now.
Mr. and Mrs. Bookman went to housekeeping in December 1895 in the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon W. Lee, 86 West Home street. They have lived at the Bookman residence, 123 North State street, for the past 40 years. In the time they have lived there, fifty young men and women have lived in their home with them.
She was recognized for her civic spirit, and gave much of her time to church affairs. For a number of years she served on the Westerville Board of Education, also was on the committee of the Citizens Lecture Course for a long time. She was a member of the Methodist church, the New Century Club and the Daughters of Union Veterans.
Besides her husband she is survived by two brothers, Ralph McCrary of Westerville and William McCrary of Columbus Grove; and a number of nieces and nephews as well as a number of very close friends. Burial was in Otterbein cemetery by C. M. Stockdale.
