Following a stroke of apoplexy Monday morning, Rev. R. A. Hitt, aged 73, for the past ten years a resident of Westerville and a prominent personage in the United Brethren denomination, died at his home, 118 North Vine street. Rev. Hitt has been confined to his home since the latter part of November, prior to which time he was actively engaged in church work, serving as president of the Conference Board of Trustees up to the time of his death.
Prominent in Church
Dr. Hitt has been a ________ character in the United Brethren denomination having served as a conference superintendent for 22 years, eight years in West Virginia Conference and 14 years in the Southeast Ohio Conference. He was a United Brethren pastor for 50 years. He had served pastorates at Canal Winchester, Chillicothe and East Ring Gold. He was a vigorous worker and a man of his convictions, declaring himself regardless of results.
Family Survives
Besides his widow, Mrs. Josephine Hitt, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Mona at home, three sons, Overt and Loy of Westerville, and Harmon of Chillicothe. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the United Brethren church.
Bishop Emeritus W. M. Weekley attended the service. Other ministers assisting in the funeral service were Dr. J. H. Harris, and Dr. S. Edwin Rupp. Blendon Lodge, F. & A. M., No. 339, participated in the services. Burial was made in Otterbein Memorial Mausoleum by G. W. Stockdale & Son.
