Obituary

At the funeral services of the late George W. Ward the following obituary was read:
George W. Ward was born in Harrison township, Knox county, Ohio, October 12, 1842. Being left an orphan at the tender age of five months he was reared in the home of his grandparents on a farm.
On the first day of October, 1862, at the age of 20 years, he enlisted in company E, 16th regiment of infantry, Ohio volunteers. While in the service of his country he was held in prison one month at Vicksburg and two months at Jackson, Mississippi. Being disabled he was discharged from the service at Camp Chase, July 29, 1863.
He was married to Nancy Johnson November 19, 1863. To them were born 5 children, two of whom died in infancy. One was killed at the age of 16 years while working with his father on the railroad. Two are living, - Mrs. Strouse, of Newark, J. J., and O. E. Ward, of Galena.
He was united in marriage to Mary Williams, of Westerville, March 7, 1892. Mr. Ward has been a resident of Westerville for twelve years.
He helped to build the C. A. & C. railroad and has been in the employ of that road for 32 years.
Since December 3, 1903, he had been in declining health, but on the day of his death March 28, he seemed much improved and was cheerful, expressing his desire that soon he might go about again, but about 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon death came unexpected but not unprepared for. He had made his peace with God. He had spent days in meditation and prayer and was ready for the summons. Mr. Ward was a respected citizen, a loving father, and a devoted husband.
The deceased was a faithful member of Blendon lodge of Masons, Rainbow lodge of Odd Fellows, and Mizpah chapter, Eastern Star.
