--------
Robert Burton Van Auken, son of Lewis Jackson and Mary Green Van Auken, was born February 25, 1859, near Galena, Ohio.
He was one of a family of three children. They received the religious teachings of Baptist parentage. At the tender age of seven his mother died and for a time he made his home with an aunt, Mrs. Hulda Van Auken Young.
Upon the re-marriage of his father they moved to a farm near Cheshire, Ohio, where he grew to manhood.
On May 18, 1873, he was united in marriage to Lillie May Cline. To this union were born three daughters and one son. The youngest daughter having preceded him in death on November 23, 1926.
All of his life was spent in or near Westerville, a part of which time they resided on a farm. For about ten years he, with his cousin, Frank Van Auken, owned and operated the Westerville Livery business.
Mr. Van Auken has been a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, of Westerville, for a number of years. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church under the pastorate of Rev. Heiser.
His generous and jovial disposition won for him many friends. He was a most loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Kind, sympathetic and understanding at all times.
He has enjoyed good health the greater part of his life never requiring the services of a physician until three weeks before his death.
After fifty years of married life, during which time both wife and children came to him for constant guidance and advice, he departed this life, Monday evening, November 12, at 10:10, aged 69 years, 8 months, 12 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure a loving wife, two daughters, Mrs. E. J. Gould and Mrs. George Andrus; a son, Ralph Burton Van Auken; one sister, Mrs. Henry Meade of Los Angeles; a half-sister, Mrs. Mary Pierce, of near Cheshire, Ohio, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends.
