The Counselor's Corner
Danita Knowles

I believe the school is a community of learners that includes administrators, counselors, teachers, and staff as well as students.
All ofthese should be contributing members of this community. the counselor should be a good citizen who is a cooperative participant within the school as well as an enthusiastic encourager and supporter. A good counselor will fulfill responsibilities and find ways to demonstrate encouragement to students, faculty, and staff. He/she should model the behavior of an inquisitive lifelong learner. Knowledge is power. Learning can be both fun and work. The counselor should help impart these facts to students through word and deed.
I believe the school counselor should be a facilitator in the learning community.
This means assisting administrators and teachers in addressing academic, behavioral, or emotional problemsof students. A counselor fulfills this responsibility as committee member, classroom observer, information source, or referral consultant. Instruction through classroom guidance activities on academic or social topics facilitates teachers' and students' needs. In this way, the counselor demonstrates sound educational practices while serving as a model of acceptance and support to students.
I believe all students can learn.
It is the role of the counselor to help students recognize and achieve their potential tolearn. sometimes this requires seaching for a solution to academic problems. Sorting through social or emotional concerns ios often necessary. There are times when it is necessary to be a mandated reporter of possible abuse, which interferes not onlywith student learning but the very nature of a healthy life. Helping students always requires the counselor to be a good listener in order to encourage them to articulate needs and identify possible solutions for problems.
Power and strength, as useful as they are, Without gentleness and tenderness Will result in tyranny.
