Getting It
Together

Begin the first day by writing your assignments down in your agenda. Write down all your assignments for each subject every day.

Use the calendars inside your agenda daily. Write down long term assignments on the calendar as well as club dates, dances, band or sports practice and their times.

Get to know your teachers and what they expect from you right away. Most teachers will tell you at the beginning of the school year how they want their assignments headed and turned in to them.

Set up your notebook so you have a special place for each subject. Keep the work for that subject in its special place. Whether your teachers prefer a divided notebook or separate folders for each subject, you need to devise a plan so you always know where to find your work.

At WCMS you should expect some homework every evening. It is a good idea for you to take some of your books home every Evening so you can review on nights that you don't have written homework.

Set aside a specific time to do your homework each night. It does not have to be the same time every day but it should be consistent each week. Look at your family's activities, dinner schedule and then plan a time for each night of the week.

Have a pocket in your notebook for pens and pencils. Be sure you always carry the supplies you need for class. Your teacher will probably give you a suggested list of supplies the first week of school.

Be sure to ask your teacher questions if you are not sure of what he/she has just explained. Asking questions not only helps you understand what is being taught but it also communicates to the teacher that you are interested in the class.

Think carefully about where you sit in class if your teachers let you choose your own seats. Sitting next to your best friend might make it too easy for you to talk during class. Choose a seat that will help you stay focused on the teacher.

Be sure you read your student handbook at the beginning of the year so you will know the procedures for making up schoolwork when you are absent. When you miss a day of school, check with your teacher or a classmate about any missed assignments or class activities.
