Dear AbbyDyke

Dear AbbyDyke,
I recently started dating a college professor. I'd like to seduce her with my vast knowledge of the lesbian culture as well as my quick wit. I have a date on friday, and I need a conversation piece. Where did the term "lesbian" come from?

The Greek lyric poet Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos in 600 BC. Her poetry celebrates the love of women for other women. Sappho surrounded herself with other such women. The term lesbian comes from these residents of Lesbos.

Dear AbbyDyke,
I've been hearing some ladies joking in the channel about being a stone butch. I have no idea what they are talking about. Can you tell me what a stone butch is so I don't look so un-dyke-educated in front of my cyber pals?

Hmmm, what's the matter? You've never heard of a Search engine? There's a great article from Curve magazine which gives a pretty accurate description.
The short version of the answer - a stone butch is a lesbian who is totally butch - masculine attire & sexual roles. She does not allow herself to receive sexual contact, only to give it. It's probably not a popular catagory of lesbian to be in the enlightened '90s but it was common in the past. Aren't you glad you've got a few more choices now?
