NON FICTION

Outing Yourself
by Michael Signorile
recommended by Chilcat
An excellent guide to those in the early stages of coming out, but an empowering book for those of us that have been out for a long time too.

Coming Out: An Act of Love
by Rob Eichberg
recommended by Chilcat
One of the original self-empowerment books for gays & lesbians. One paragraph alone got me through 2 years of the coming out process. Author was one of the founders of National Coming Out Day in October.

The Original Coming Out Stories
by Julia Penelope and Susan J. Wolfe
recommended by Chilcat
Written in 1980, this collection tells the stories of the courageous women who came out in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. This book is part of the herstory we all need to read. The stories and situations may make you very grateful to be living in the 1990s and inspire you to live your own life true to yourself. If they could do it, so can I.

Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers

by Lisa Alther
recommended by danso
A good story about a lesbian and a therapist and how their lives affect each other

Six of One
and
Bingo
by Rita Mae Brown
recommended by danso
Bingo is the sequel to Six of One. Both are humorous but touching as the lives of the Hunsenmeir sisters are followed over 50 years. I read Bingo first and still think I like it a little bit better but both books are good

Are you girls Traveling Alone? - Adventures in Lesbianic Logic

An anthology of her writings in The Lesbian News from 1982 - 1991, some amusing, some serious, some very touching - all worth reading.

Testimonies: Lesbian Coming-Out Stories
edited by Barber and Holmes (1988)
recommended by Chilcat
More coming out stories, I just couldn't get enough of them when I was going through the process.

Homophobia: A Weapon of Sexism
by Suzanne Pharr (1988)
recommended by Chilcat
An analysis of why homophobia exists and the way it works. Must reading.

Look Me In the Eye: Old Women, Aging and Ageism
by Barbara Macdonald with Cynthia Rich. (1st Ed 1984)
recommended by Chilcat
A powerful book that describes how Ageism & sexism affect our lives whether we are straight or lesbian. I wanted to give a copy to every lesbian I knew. To quote May Sarton -- "Look Me in the Eye is a tremendously stirring recognition of what we are doing to ourselves as we grow older an a rousing attack on what is being done to us."

Different Daughters
Edited by Louise Rafkin. (1987)
recommended by Chilcat
An anthology of essays by mothers of lesbians. This book was the last motivating factor in my choice to come out to my parents. I mailed one to my mother who later described it as "the best thing I could have done for her".

Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay and Christian in America
by Mel White (1994)
recommended by Chilcat
There are plenty of us who need to work through this issue in some way or another. This is a good resource for that process.
