CONFESSIONS OF A TRAITOR
In The World According to Garp, Garp's mother, Jenny Fields, writes an autobiography called "A Sexual Suspect." Sometimes I think that if I were going to write one for myself, I might call it "A Sexual Traitor." I have often felt myself to be a traitor to my own sex. So much of what passes for "typical" male behavior has always been incomprehensible to me. At the same time, much of what is typically "female" seemed so familiar and right.
I am a great fan of automobile racing, baseball and hockey. Those of you who have watched similar sporting events are familiar with the many commercials that portray guys being guys. Beer commercials are, perhaps, the best example of these. Now, aside from the fact that I don't drink, I look at the antics of many of the men portrayed and just want to jump through the screen and smack them while yelling, "Stop being such a**holes!" There's one particular commercial that's for an automotive product where the voice-over says things like, "Your car never complained if you forgot it's birthday. It never asked does this make me look fat?" The sub-text of commercials like this makes me nuts. (It's not where I'm headed with this, but the power of television to convey subtle messages is frightening and I'm sure goes a long way to fostering these beliefs.)
As a child I can remember certain commercials just torquing me off. Remember the Geritol commercial? "My wife. I think I'll keep her." YOU THINK YOU'LL KEEP HER YOU NEANDERTHAL MORON? (This one teed off Mary Chapin Carpenter enough to write a song called "He Thinks He'll Keep Her.") I can recall trying to discuss this commercial with my male friends and none of them seemed to see anything wrong. I couldn't understand why it bothered me but not other boys.
When I was in navigator training in the Air Force, I became somewhat of an outcast among my classmates because I did stupid things like buying my wife flowers for no obvious reason. I didn't understand why the other guys didn't do the same things and why my doing them created a problem. (This is not to be construed as me patting myself on the back. Trust me, I'm sometimes no day at the beach. It's just an example.)
These are just a couple examples of why I have perceived and characterized myself as a sexual traitor. I have come to understand what it is about me that is different. I no longer question it; I just recognize it. Such recognition has allowed me to finally learn to accept and enjoy this aspect of who I am.

Tri Ess N.E. Monthly Meeting

The doors should be unlocked and access to the church hall available at 3:00PM. There are rest rooms available in which to change.
The Executive Board meeting will start promptly at 3:30PM. (Unless, of course, we get stuck in traffic somewhere between here and there.) The general membership meeting will begin around 4:00PM. It's a TAG SALE day. Time to clean out your closets and bring your extras to the meeting for others to purchase.
Dinner this month will bean Italian Festival. We need members to bring an appetizer, a main course, rolls, salad, beverages, desserts, etc.
The meeting will be over by 8:00PM.
Highlights of the Last Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 4:00PM on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Everyone in the circle introduced themselves. All 2002 Executive Committee members were present. Several guests were in attendance. S.P.I.C.E. planning continues and the chapter SPICE board will soon be formed. [See Joy's SPICE Rack.] Reminders were made regarding membership renewals. Gerri announced that he continues updating the TENE website. Eleanor won the TENE Logo Contest and will receive five dollars worth of free raffle tickets in the April 50/50 raffle. All were reminded that the April meeting will also be a Tag Sale meeting. Gerri shared upcoming events with the membership. SOs met separately while the CDs talked about how CDing is portrayed in film and TV. Discussion groups were followed by a feast of casseroles and desserts. The group adjourned and several members went on to party at Friend's Landing.
What Can We Do For You?

Our chairperson, Marcia Gray, brought this question to the group during our January meeting. It was specifically addressed to the single members of our group, because so many of our discussions in both our meetings and the e-group forum have to do with the issues of being a married crossdresser. One quick answer was "Bring single women to the meetings!" which brought a good laugh. It is a serious subject, though for the single members of our group: "How and where can I meet a single woman who will accept my crossdressing?" I think all members need to think about those who know about their crossdressing and, if any are single women, try to approach them about attending one of our group's events, even a non-crossdressing event.
Later in the discussion a chapter member mentioned having more places to go and more things to do while dressed. It does seem that lately we have not been exchanging messages too often about getting together anywhere. Maybe everyone is tired of the same old nightclub/bar scene, but if nothing else, a bar is a place to get together with others instead of just sitting at home.
What these two subjects brought to light was the fact that if you don't ask for it, you won't get it! Most importantly, if you want something, do something about it!
Do you want more chances to shop en femme? Then find a store that will accommodate an after-hours group of CDs, like Gerri and Anne-Marie have done. If you'd like to go to a restaurant or theater with some of your fellow-group members, then find a place that will oblige. If you're uncomfortable talking in person to someone to organize such a venture, use the phone.
Would you like our monthly discussion topic to be something you have on your mind? Bring it up on the e-group forum. Want to start a crossdresser-only sci-fi discussion group? Have a beach party? A singles party? Just do it!
Tri Ess New England is growing in leaps and bounds - but it is your group. It exists only for support of its members, and without your participation it could fade away as some of the older Tri Ess groups have done.
To paraphrase JFK, "Ask not what your club can do for you - ask what you can do for your club!"

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Ladies, the time has come to raise your hands to volunteer to be an integral part of S.P.I.C.E. XI. To date, I've come up with four committees to help make S.P.I.C.E. XI the best ever and I need volunteers to work on each of the committees listed below. I will start recruiting committee members at the upcoming general meeting on April 13th. I'll be passing sign up sheets around the circle. Be there or be square! The chairpersons of these committees plus Marcia, Gerri, and I will constitute the TriEss New England S.P.I.C.E. XI Board.

If you don't find me, I'll be looking for you. I'm hoping to have Spice Board meetings at our regular TENE meetings, initially taking 15 to 30 minutes of time following our meal, possibly during cleanup time. Fundraising: Coming up with fundraising ideas for within the chapter and outside of the chapter... soliciting items? from New England businesses?/ states?/other TriEss chapters/ forums, etc. for use in fundraising activities...running fundraising events to support our chapter's costs related to S.P.I.C.E. activities...running fundraising events at S.P.I.C.E. to support scholarships to S.P.I.C.E. XI ...
Manpower: contacting chapter members and getting commitments to work at S.P.I.C.E. XI or at fundraising activities or to transport participants to an offsite activity...
Program: developing theme and/or ideas for seminars/lectures/activities to be presented at S.P.I.C.E. XI ...finding presenters/facilitators for seminars, etc...negotiating agreement terms with presenters/facilitators...working with presenters/facilitators to arrange for adequate materials, workspace, set ups etc...
Activities: coming up with activities in the area to offer S.P.I.C.E. XI participants negotiating group rates, transportation, etc...need activity for Friday afternoon, e.g. trip to Yankee Candle... possible S.P.I.C.E. Crossdressers, Who Are We? [PART 2]

Why Do We Do This?
Several theories have been kicking around to explain why some genetic males enjoy femininity so much. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the "sissy boy syndrome" was popular as an explanation of why we have a need to dress like women. According to this theory (which was also used to explain homosexuality) "people like us" have weak, passive fathers and domineering mothers. We end up identifying with our mother and an "adequate male gender identity" fails to form. No evidence has been found to support this theory. Some people believe the need to "dress" is genetic. According to some research, if you're a crossdresser, there's a greater than average chance that you have a brother or sister who's gay.
The most popular theory among researchers and therapists who work with crossdressers today is that we have 'female brains'. Basically all fetuses start off as female but if there's a Y chromosome, the fetus will "masculinize", i.e. the fetus will become a boy. Exceptions to this can occur. The adrenal glands of a pregnant woman under stress will secrete a large dosage of a hormone called corticosterone. Corticosterone, in turn, can easily enter the fetal brain, suppressing the release of pituitary hormones that in turn suppress testosterone production. If this happens at an early stage of fetal development, it is believed the result will be a "female patterned sexual preference" in the male fetus, i.e. homosexuality. It is believed that this same hormone change can lead to transgenderism. If the testosterone suppression occurs somewhat later in fetal development it may affect the baby's brain development and the boy baby will have a "failure to fully masculinize". The baby will have a "female mental pattern", i.e. will grow up biologically male with a strong feminine side. If the testosterone suppression occurs at a low level the baby may grow up to be a crossdresser, if it happens to a larger extent, the baby may be a transsexual.
There has also been some research in brain physiology among transgendered adults. Scientists have dissected the brains of dead transsexuals. It was found that the area in the hypothalamus region of the brain, that part of the brain connected to moods and emotions, is far more similar in structure to those of genetic females than genetic males. This may be the result of the transsexual being on hormones for years rather than any prenatal influences. There is still so much that is unknown.
As I've already implied, crossdressers are indistinguishable from other men except for our need to express a feminine side. Many crossdressers (including myself) can't fully articulate why we have a need to dress and present ourselves as women. Essentially we have a strong need to express feminine feelings. The first thing many crossdressers will say after being asked the question "why?" is that we do it because "its fun" and "it feels good". Last summer I posted an informal survey on the e-group asking people why they crossdressed and what they hoped to get out of doing this, if anything. One crossdresser said "she" regarded herself as "bi-gendered" and cherished the ability to switch back and forth in gender roles. Another person said "she" regarded "herself" as a "blend" and combined male and female elements into a kind of tapestry. Many answered that they regarded themselves as having a strong male gender identity but also had a strong feminine side that needed to be expressed.
In this sense crossdressing would seem similar to a conventional hobby such as acting in community theatre or performing Civil War reenactments. For many, it is a deep-seated need. Not being able to dress for an extended period of time can often result in anxiety and depression. As Peggy Rudd said in "My Husband Wears My Clothes" a crossdresser not being able to dress would "break into a thousand pieces". It is deeply satisfying and powerfully reinforcing for the CD to express his femininity.
For most (roughly 75%) the need to crossdress is not connected to a problem of gender identity. The expression of femininity can be comfortably switched on and off. Most crossdressers do not want to be women, they wish to emulate women. While with the majority of crossdressers the need to dress and express their feminine side is "stable", there are some exceptions. With some crossdressers "coming out" and expressing their feminine side after a long period of repression can lead to great changes and may lead to a major conflict with gender identity. In the language of personality theory experts, a man in this situation may reach a stage where the male master program running the sub-routines can no longer adequately function. Some crossdressers I know would love to live full time as women. However, they do not view this as possible because of commitments to partners, children, family and career. In certain occupations such as teaching, any hint that one is a crossdresser or transgendered will lead to immediate dismissal and possible humiliation and social ostracism.

The By-Laws of Tau Sigma Nu Epsilon
A Chapter of Tri-Ess International
Section 1. Name
1.1. This Chapter of the Society for the Second Self (Tri-Ess International) shall be known as Tau Sigma Nu Epsilon. (TSNE)
Section 2. Purpose
The purpose of TSNE is to:
2.1. Act as a non-sexual support group for heterosexual crossdressers, spouses and significant others of crossdressers and their immediate families (including parents, siblings, sons and daughters) and to assist it's members in developing understanding and acceptance of the qualities essential to their personalities.
2.2. Further our purpose by providing opportunities for crossdressing, programs, services and social activities for the support of our members. We seek to promote the education and enlightenment of our members and society as to the nature of crossdressing through local, national, and international Tri-Ess Outreach Programs.
2.3. Assist members with issues related to crossdressing whenever requested.
2.4. Promote the intent of Tri-Ess as stated in the Tri-Ess By-Laws and policies.
2.5. Be an affiliated Chapter of Tri-Ess international. Therefore, any Chapter By-Laws, policy or provision thereof which conflicts with any Tri-Ess International By-Law, policy or provision is hereby declared null and void.
Section 3: Membership
3.1. Eligibility
3.1.1. Membership in TSNE is restricted to full members in good standing in Tri-Ess International; however, membership in Tri-Ess International does not automatically qualify one for membership in TSNE.
3.1.2. All applications for prospective members shall be by invitation of one or more TSNE members in good standing.
3.1.3. All prospective members must be interviewed by two or more authorized representatives of TSNE.
3.1.4. Prospective members may attend any combination of two Chapter meetings or functions before they must declare their intentions to join the Chapter.
3.1.4.1. Item 3.1.4. does not restrict attendance at functions of TSNE by any member in good standing of any other sanctioned Tri-Ess Chapter.
3.1.5. If a prospective member's spouse, significant other or immediate family member wishes to attend Chapter meetings and participate in Chapter activities, all must agree to observe the Chapter's rules and standards.
3.1.6. Spouses, significant others or immediate family members of heterosexual crossdressers may enjoy all the rights of full voting members of TSNE Chapter providing they meet all the criteria for membership.
3.1.7. Spouses, partners, significant others or immediate family members who have lost their partners may apply to the Executive Committee for a continuation of their full membership status. The Executive Committee, by a majority vote, may grant such full voting membership on a case-by-case basis.
3.1.8. All participants in TSNE Spouses' and Partner's Support Group must be qualified for membership under the general provisions of Section 3 of these By-Laws, including membership in Tri-Ess International.
3.2. Non-discrimination.
3.2.1. The preceding section establishes the sole criteria for membership in TSNE.
3.2.2. Membership shall not be denied on the basis of age (except as to minors), race, color, creed, national origin, religion, physical handicap, gender, or gender role.
3.3. Classes of Membership.
3.3.1. Full members are entitled to all rights and privileges including the right to vote on Chapter matters that are subjected to a vote.
3.3.2. Affiliate members who are members in good standing of Tri-Ess International and another Chapter of Tri-Ess who may reside part time in the immediate area or who may be visiting the locality on such a regular basis so as to make them available for TSNE activities and meetings. Affiliate members will pay affiliate dues as proscribed by the Executive Committee. Affiliate members are entitled to a copy of the Chapter newsletter and may attend Chapter meetings and events; however, they may not vote on Chapter business.
3.4. Establishment of Membership
3.4.1. The membership year shall run from January 1 to December 31.
3.4.2. An eligible person shall become a member for the year in which he/she applies by tendering the corresponding membership application to the Executive Assistant and the necessary membership fee to the Treasurer.
3.5. Duties of Members
3.5.1. The members of TSNE shall hold the personal privacy of all other members in the highest regard. Information about the Chapter and Chapter members, individually and/or collectively, (e.g. real names, work locations, addresses, telephone numbers) is confidential and may not be disclosed outside the Chapter meeting in any way without the express written permission from the member involved.
3.5.2. All members of TSNE shall support and abide by the By-Laws of TSNE and Tri-Ess International.
3.5.3. Members shall conduct themselves in a ladylike or gentlemanly manner.
3.5.4. Members shall strive to make visitors and prospective members feel welcome.
3.5.5. Full TSNE Chapter members may vote, if eligible, in TSNE elections and referenda.
3.5.6. Members may promote TSNE and Tri-Ess International.
3.5.7. Media Relations
3.5.7.1. All contacts with the legitimate news media must be coordinated through the Chapter Chair. Individual Chapter members are asked not to represent themselves as spokespersons for either Tri-Ess International or TSNE unless authorized to do so in writing by the Chapter Chair.
3.5.7.2. There are no restrictions on correspondence between or among individual Chapter members and their pen pals. However, members are asked to observe the same rules of conduct in their correspondence with others, specifically, personal information concerning other Chapter members must not be discussed with those outside the Chapter.
3.6. Voluntary Relinquishment of Membership
3.6.1. Any member may voluntarily relinquish membership in TSNE at any time by communicating the desire to do so in writing to an Executive Committee member.
3.6.2. If a membership is relinquished, all information concerning the member shall be deleted from the records and any ad hoc fees paid by the member for activities subsequent to the relinquishment shall be refunded; however, no portion of the membership fee shall be refunded. Re: section 3.7.9.
3.7. Involuntary Termination of Membership
3.7.1. Membership may be involuntarily terminated if any member of TSNE engages in conduct detrimental to the Chapter as defined by the Board, such as, but not limited to:
3.7.1.1. Unauthorized disclosure(s) of confidential information affecting another member, or the member's peace of mind or that of the member's family.
3.7.1.2. Misappropriation of any funds of the Chapter or moneys appropriated for Tri-Ess International.
3.7.1.3. Willful disobedience of the Tri-Ess International or TSNE Chapter By-Laws.
3.7.1.4. Verbal, written, or published statement detrimental to the security or peace of mind of individual members of Tri-Ess as a whole.
3.7.1.5. Any illegal use of a controlled substance and/or abuse of alcoholic beverages.
3.7.1.6. Obtaining admission to Tri-Ess and/or TSNE Chapter by false statements, concealment, deception, and/or evasion of facts.
3.7.1.7. Overt sexual behavior or behavior not conducive to the peace of mind of all.
3.7.1.8. Appropriation of the personal property of any member or removal of such property.
3.7.1.9. Refusal to assist in duly authorized internal investigation of a charged member or willfully suppressing evidence or facts with regard thereto and/or bearing false witness to same.
3.7.1.10. Failure to comply with Chapter rules, codes of conduct, or any provision lawfully made by the Officers with Chapter majority vote, or failure to adhere to any Chapter lawful regulation.
3.7.1.11. Any member holding an office may be charged and removed from office if found guilty by majority vote of the Chapter of any of the following:
Failure to comply with state or federal laws related to proper functioning of the Chapter.
Misconduct or malfeasance.
Any cause rendering continuance in office injurious to the Chapter.
3.7.2. Any member of TSNE may request the termination of the membership of another member.
3.7.3. Such a request must be in writing and must set forth in reasonable specificity the basis for requesting the termination.
3.7.4. The Chair shall forward a copy of the written request to the Executive Committee for a vote to involuntarily terminate TSNE membership.
3.7.5. Prior the Committee's vote to terminate, the complaining member shall present evidence of the misconduct and the accused member may present a defense.
3.7.6. Deliberation by the Executive Committee will be in closed session, excluding the plaintiff and the defendant.
3.7.7. At the request of the accused member, a secret ballot and vote tally shall be held and witnessed by any member chosen by the accused member and the vote certified by the Executive Assistant of the Chapter.
3.7.8. A vote of sixty percent of the Executive Committee members present shall result in the termination of the accused member.
3.7.9. Upon such termination, all information concerning the member shall be deleted from the records and there shall be refunded any ad hoc fees paid by the member for activities subsequent to the relinquishment. No portion of the membership fee however, shall be refundable.
3.7.10. An involuntary termination of membership in Tri-Ess International automatically terminates membership in TSNE.
Section 4. Executive Committee
4.1 General Requirements
4.1.1 Each member of the Executive Committee shall be a member of TSNE in good standing and shall remain as such throughout tenure in office.
4.1.2 A member shall hold only one office at a time.
4.2 Powers of Executive Committee
4.2.1 The executive and administrative powers of TSNE shall be vested in an Executive Committee consisting of the following officers:

Treasurer
Director

Activities Director
4.2.2. The Executive Committee reserves the right to restructure offices and officers during a term of office so long as every committee member has been elected by the membership.
4.2.3. The Executive Committee has ultimate authority over any Chapter matters not specifically addressed by these By-Laws.
4.3. Duties of the Executive Committee
The Executive committee shall:
4.3.1. Be responsible for the effective administration of TSNE chapter.
4.3.2. Hold monthly meetings scheduled at the discretion of the Chair to discuss and act on administrative matters.
4.3.3. Appoint committees and delegate authority as necessary to perform tasks required for the fulfillment of Executive Committee responsibilities.
4.3.4. Make recommendations for action to be voted upon by full members of the Chapter.
4.4. Executive Committee Meetings and Quorum
4.4.1. The Executive Committee shall meet monthly.
4.4.2. Three members of the Executive Committee being present constitute a Quorum.
4.4.3. Notification of results and decisions made by said Quorum shall be sent by the Chair or member appointed by same, to all Executive Committee members not in attendance.
Section 5. Chapter Officers
5.1 Duties and responsibilities
5.1.1. The Chair shall preside over all meetings and is responsible for the daily administration of affairs of TSNE. The Chair shall become the Director upon completion of the elected term of office as Chair.
5.1.2. The Vice-Chair shall assist the Chair in matters related to Chapter administration and act on behalf of the Chair during the Chair's absences from any meeting. The Vice-Chair shall become Chair upon completion of the elected term of office as Vice-Chair.
5.1.3. The Treasurer shall keep an accurate account of Chapter funds, receive all revenues, pay all Chapter expenses, maintain the membership roster, and determine the existence of a quorum prior to the opening of any business meeting.
5.1.4. The Executive Assistant shall keep a written record of the proceedings of each meeting of the Chapter and shall be responsible for forwarding meeting minutes to the newsletter editor in a timely manner for publication.
5.1.5. The Director (Past Chair) shall serve as a counselor to the Executive Committee and perform other duties as assigned by the Chair.
5.1.6. The mailing and membership lists are confidential. Only the Executive Committee shall be permitted access to either list, except in response to duly constituted judicial process. These lists are not to be stored in any electrical format other than on removable media. No member shall reveal any information of another member, except with the other member's express permission.
5.1.7 The Newsletter Editor shall publish a monthly Newsletter to the TSNE Membership that includes, but is not limited to, minutes of the previous month's Executive Committee and Membership meetings, as well as Articles submitted by members and other interested parties that support the Tri Ess purpose and position.
5.1.8 The Activities Director will oversee the planning and implementation of all TSNE activities, either at meetings or additional chapter functions, solicit the membership for ideas for activities and appoint a Chair from the membership to plan and implement such activities, oversee the Vendor Review Committee, and verify that all speakers, guest or vendors have been approved by the Vendor Review Committee before scheduling them for an event and maintain a calendar of events.
5.2 Terms of Office
5.2.1. The Chair serves a one-year term and then serves as Director the following year.
5.2.2. The Vice Chair serves a one-year term and then serves as Chair the following year.
5.2.3. The Director serves a one-year term.
5.2.4. The Executive Assistant serves a one-year term.
5.2.5. The Treasurer serves a three-year term.
5.2.6. The Newsletter Editor serves a one-year term.
5.2.7. The Activities Director serves a one-year term.
5.3. Elections The Executive Committee shall present a slate to the Chapter at the December meeting. Nominations can be made from the floor; however, if no nominations are made and seconded, the slate will stand as presented. If nominations for any or all positions are made and seconded, each nominated individual may present points favorable to his/her selection. A vote will then be taken on those positions for which nominations have been made. A simple majority of members present will determine the victor.
Section 6. Amendments of By-laws Purpose
6.1. Process.
6.1.1. The By-laws of TSNE may be amended as set forth herein, with the exception of Section 2.5.
6.1.2. All voting members must be advised in writing of any proposed amendment a minimum of twenty days prior to the meeting at which the matter is to be voted on.
6.1.3. Each amendment to be made must be voted on independently.
6.1.4. Members may vote in person or by mail, but voting shall be conducted during the business portion of a Chapter meeting by secret ballot and tabulated by the Treasurer and another person as determined by the members present.
6.1.5. A two-thirds majority vote of votes received shall be required for any amendment to pass.
6.1.6. Typographical or grammatical correctness shall not be considered amendments.
6.2. Amendments to Section 2.5.
6.2.1. Shall require a two-thirds majority of all of the members eligible to vote.
6.2.2. Shall constitute a withdrawal from membership in Tri-Ess and will require immediate notification be given to that organization in writing by the Chair or other duly appointed Chapter member.
