President Kennedy's inaugural address is best remembered for his quote, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." It has been quoted and paraphrased so many times that it has become a cliché. That having been said, I must say it's a pretty darn good cliché. So far be it from me to reinvent the wheel. Ask not what your chapter can do for you; ask what you can do for your chapter. I bring this up because we have reached the midpoint of our year. The Executive Board, as it is currently constituted, only has half its term left. It is time to seriously consider running for an office. No, folks, it's not too early. For 2003, Gerri will move up to Chair, I will become the Director...and all other offices are up for grabs. Vice-Chair, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Secretary and, for the first time, Treasurer need to be filled. Val's three-year term as Treasurer ends, a first-time occurrence in Tri-Ess New England. We need people to step up and run for offices. Yes! Being on the Board is more work. Yes! Being on the Board is more responsibility. Yes! Being on the Board takes more time. But it is really rewarding and a wonderful experience. Kim, Gerri and Val have been on the Board since the chapter was organized and I joined the Board in the first year. Speaking for myself, I can say that it has been an extremely rewarding experience. I believe Gerri, Kim and Val will echo that. Because of S.P.I.C.E. we are in for a busy year. Joy is going to need a lot of help with the planning and execution of S.P.I.C.E but the chapter will still need the guiding hand of the Executive Board. With the growth in membership that we have experienced, I'm sure there's a great deal of untapped talent just waiting for someone to ask. Well, I'm asking, here and now. Don't think you need a great deal of experience to be on the Board. I attended my first meeting in June 1999 and wound up on the Board that day. Yes, you heard me right. I hadn't yet attended a general membership meeting when I attended my first Board meeting. It's simply a matter of ya-gotta-wanna. If you think you're interested, talk to any Board member. When you consider the composition of this year's Board, you need not be concerned with whether you're a CD or SO or even the child of a member. All that's required is that you be a member of the chapter. So step up to the plate. Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes. Take the bull by the horns. Stand up and be counted. Ask not...oops, that's where we came in. Well, enough clichés. Just do it! Marcia Highlights of the Last Meeting The meeting was called to order at 4:00PM on Saturday, May 11, 2002. Everyone in the circle introduced themselves. Several 2002 Executive Committee members were absent. Bob from Avalon did a two hour presentation on make-up techniques. S.P.I.C.E. planning continues. Marcia reminded all of the summer picnic at Dave and Michele's. Val spoke about the SO luncheon. Gerri talked about the need to find a new location for future meetings. Everyone had a delightful deli dinner. The group adjourned and several members went on to party at Friend's Landing. Tri Ess N.E. Monthly Meeting Saturday, June 8, 2002 The doors should be unlocked and access to the church hall available at 3:00PM. There are rest rooms available in which to change. The Executive Committee meeting will start promptly at 3:30PM. (Unless, of course, we get stuck in traffic somewhere between here and there.) The general membership meeting will begin around 4:00PM. This month dinner will be Blind Pot Luck. Post to the e-group whether you'll be bringing a main dish, side dish, appetizer, beverage, or dessert. We ask members who do not bring food to contribute to the till, with a suggested donation of $5. Dinner will be followed by clean up. The meeting will be over by 8:00PM. Joy's Rack We still need volunteers to help with planning and execution for this event. The contract with the hotel has been forwarded to S.P.I.C.E. central for review and approval/ negotiation. Cheryl, Director of Tri-Ess, Family Support has asked that next year's S.P.I.C.E. hot topic be either 'Boundaries' or 'Trust Issues'. Does anyone have any preference? Anyone have any ideas for presenters? A flyer as well as the registration form for S.P.I.C.E. XI were designed and forwarded to Cheryl for inclusion in this year's S.P.I.C.E. package. Copies will be available at our next meeting. Joy S.P.I.C.E. XI Chairperson Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better at using the computer. They had been going at it for days, and God was tired of hearing all the bickering. Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a test which will take two hours and it will judge who does the better job." So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes. They sent email. They sent out email with attachments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job. But, ten minutes before the time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen screaming every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically screaming, "It's gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!" Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all his files from the past two hours. Satan observed this and became even more irate. "Wait! He cheated! How did he do it? God shrugged and said, "Jesus Saves."
