DJBEAR'S CHRISTIAN WALK

BEING A CHRISTIAN

One fact about me is that I believe very strongly in God and the Bible. God made us who we are and God does not make mistakes. It is God to whom we look in times of trouble and He is the one who heals, who still is a miracle worker, and to whom we must look for salvation.

My walk with God has been one which started in my younger days. My Grandmother McCready was a huge influence on me and she read her bible daily. I could not wait to join the United Church of Canada (Methodist, Prebyterian, and Congregational) when I became 12 and often attended church even without my parents. I was active, teaching Sunday School, being a member of Young Peoples (and eventually Presbytery executive), official board, building committee and later in Edmonton and Kitchener, being Chair of Christian Education, Chair of Board of Stewards, and Elder. I left the United Church in 1979 when a Sunday School Teacher asked us not to bring our oldest son back to her Sunday School class.

The journey became much more compliacted then. After a year of not attending any Church, but maintaining daily devotions, a new Missionary Church was started in our neighbourhood and the family joined. They were bible believing and surprise of suprises, I finally got to learn more of the literal bible. It was hard to admit to myself that my training and busyness in the United Church had not prepared me for the closeness to God which my study brought me during eight years in the Missionary Church did. Because of a move we changed churches several times after that - Plymouth Brethren, Community Church, and Pentecostal. Clearly, all were evangelical or fundamentalist and had differnet offerings - spirit, bible teaching, prayer emphasis. It has been a wonderful learning experience.

In 1997, I went on sabbatical to St. Louis area where there is a wonderful church named Fee Fee Baptist in Bridgeton. There I felt moved to adult baptism and membership and clearly that is my current church home even if I can not attend every Sunday. I attend a Mennonite Brethren Church while in Kitchener-Waterloo and find it is biblical in emphasis but also is oriented to seekers and many different types of study.
