What is Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic depression, is a commom illness that involves recurrent episodes of mania and major depression. A person with Bipolar can have mood swings from extreme highs (Mania) to extreme lows(depression), with periods of normal moods in between. Each individual experiences vary. Some individuals may experience either mania or depression, but in some cases the individual can experience both mania and depression at the same time. These mood episodes can last for a few days to as long as several months. Typically depression last longer than mania. A person with Bipolar usually experiences an average of ten episodes of mania or depression in his/her life time but in some cases a person with Bipolar can experience more frequent mood episodes. Patients with more than four episodes a years are classifed as being a rapid cycler. Symptoms of Mania: * Increased energy, activity, restlessness, racing thoughts ans rapid speech * Extreme irritability and distractibility * Decreased sleep * Uncharacteristically poor judgement * Increased sexual drive * Denial that anything is wrong * Overspending * Taking higher risks Symptoms of Depression: * Persistent sad or empty mood * Feeling of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness or helplessness * Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities, including sex * Decreased energy, feeling of fatigue * Difficulty in concentrating, remembering or making decisions * Change in appetite or weight * Thoughts of death or suicide More Information |
