To my supervisor, project manager, and team leaders,

The intent of this letter is that I open up discussion on the best way to
transition with minimal impact on work productivity for myself and my
coworkers, and make this as smooth as possible for everyone concerned.

The first step for me was to contact Human Resources and determine the legal
stance (Company) takes on this issue. Transsexuality is not specifically
included in anti-discrimination laws, and I therefore was required to
establish legal precedent for this issue. (Company) supports me in this matter.

Now, I wish to educate the management structure, and assist in the following
issues involved in my transition, as well as any others that may come up.

Informing  Coworkers:
This can be done in one of several ways. Frequently, a trained
professional (perhaps the therapist I am currently working with) will give a
presentation on gender issues, sensitivity training, and proper ways to
handle problems. Alternatively, and specifically with employees I work with
on a day to day basis, I can speak to them individually, perhaps during a
lunch meeting or during 'cakes' on some Friday, and inform them of my plan
to transition. If someone at (Company) wishes, they may give a presentation to
employees in addition to any or all of the above mentioned methods. I have
studied the issue thoroughly and will make myself available to answer any
questions on the subject for anyone who wishes to understand the issue.

Dress:
I want to be very clear on the issue of dress. I do NOT plan to come
to work the day after telling coworkers that I'm transitioning wearing
excessively feminine attire. Initially, I intend to continue wearing
business casual clothing that is mostly unisex; khakis, polo shirts,
button-up shirts, etc. I may occasionally wear skirts, or dresses, but not
on a day to day basis, and not immediately. For me this is a matter of
transition, not metamorphosis.

Harassment:
I intend to do my best to bear minor incidents of harassment without
making an issue of it. I understand how difficult this issue will be for
some people. However, I will keep a record of such incidents, which will be
available for my supervisor or project leader, in the event that harassment
escalates or becomes a recurring problem.

Use of Restrooms:
It is my intent to have legal issues resolved before transitioning
at work, so that my legal name and gender will be changed. After I start
living 'full time', I intend to use the ladies' restroom where no unisex
restrooms are available, and believe will have full legal access to it.
Again though, I understand there may be some coworkers that are
uncomfortable with this. If this is the case, arrangements can be made to
accommodate peaceful resolution of the situation. Much of this problem will
be avoided while I am at the (Such and such) site because I intend to use the
unisex/disabled restroom there.

My time here at (Company) has given me the impression that this company is
truly open to diversity in its employees. I look forward to a long and loyal
career here, and know that this minor change will soon become a non-issue,
and with some planning up-front, will have no impact on the productivity of
myself or my coworkers.

Sincerely,
Lynn
