MEDITATION

You are the ground upon which all things rest

You are the Earth from which all things grow

You are here; you are solid; you are alive

You are the point from which all things begin

The consciousness level of the first chakra is centered around survival.  This is the maintenance program that protects the health of our bodies and our day to day mundane needs.  Here we function from an instinctual level of consciousness, concerned with hunger, fear, the need for rest, warmth and shelter.

The survival mechanism stimulates our first awakening of consciousness as it brings our attention directly into the here and now.  Threats to survival stimulate the adrenal glands for that burst of extra energy when we need it.  As our body gets energized, our awareness is heightened.  The challenge of survival requires us to think and act quickly, and to innovate new solutions.  Our consciousness is spontaneously focused on our situation in a way that rarely occurs at other times.

No matter how far our attention may wonder, in the interest of the body's survival, the demands of this chakra will always bring us back again.  This instinct goes beyond our conscious control and, like the tonic drone of a bagpipe, it is a baseline level of consciousness underlying everything we think or do.

In order to consolidate our energy in the first chakra, we must first see to our survival needs in a healthy and direct way so that our consciousness is not dominated by them.  To ignore these demands is to be constantly pulled back into "survival consciousness" - giving us the experience of being unable to "get off the ground".

Survival brings us again back to our roots - to a time when life was constantly threatened.  Our very existence depended on the strength of this chakra - the strength to fight, to run, and to protect ourselves from dangerous enemies.  In early times, concern for survival was the primary focus of consciousness - and with it we built a foundation, a culture and a civilization.
