The mission of the Cooper Union Fencing Club is to promote the sport of fencing among the students of the Cooper Union. In doing so, we provide the student body, alumni, and faculty members with access to a rigorous form of athletic recreation involving a balanced intellectual component, as befits Cooper students. The Club seeks not only to welcome complete beginners into the sport and provide them with instruction and training, but also to offer the experienced fencer the opportunity for further development and practice.

Thus, the Club cultivates an appreciation for the unusual art/sport of fencing, which incorporates but is not limited to: swordplay, coordination, honesty, quick thinking, courteous competitiveness, and elements of history, the French language, and Polish profanities. Fencing also involves palpable health benefits with a relative minimum of invested time. People who fence enjoy drastically improved leg and abdominal strength; muscle density; cardiovascular endurance and capacity; quickened reflexes; and a remedy for falling arches. In addition, fencing provides the student with experience in analyzing human character under duress.

The Club promotes fellowship and camaraderie both through participation in both the sport itself and in participation in club administration. An additional cultural element is to be incorporated through occasional non-fencing Fencing Club meetings, in which we may conduct field trips to relevant museum exhibitions, or gather to enjoy fencing-related classic films and footage of national- and world-level fencing competitions.

The Fencing Club upholds the illustrious tradition of fencing as the oldest contiguously practiced sport at the Cooper Union. It aspires to return to its status as a competitive Cooper Union varsity team in the fullness of time.

In form, the Fencing Club should consist of the following: Members; Coach; Equipment; Venue; and Consistent Identity. This consistent identity is to be manifested through mission statements and unique graphical, tactical, and social identities.

The supervision of the Club is to be managed by the following leadership structure: The Coach is supported at practices by one or more Assistant Coaches, while administrative duties are carried out by the Club Officers. These officer positions are to held by student members, faculty members (who are as welcome as current students and alumni to join the Fencing Club), and an Athletic Association liaison/coordinator.

The Club Officers consist of the President, whose responsibilities include event planning, lesson and meeting scheduling, acting as liason to Dean Baker and the fencing coach, and cooperating with the Treasurer and Armourer in budgeting; the Secretary, who records lesson formats, takes and keeps signup records, and updates the schedule and lesson reviews on the website; the Treasurer, who conducts JAC funding applications, assists the President and Armourer in budgeting, and sends acknowledgements to donors; the Armourer, who maintains the equipment inventory, keeps sign-out records, determines new equipment needs, and updates the website's online inventory; and the Publicist, who creates and posts all flyers in cooperation with the President, and updates the news portion of the website.
