Divergence Volume2, Number 5 September/October 1997
This Calendar of Events is produced and distributed by NLA:Atlanta for those interested in
leather/SM/fetish clubs and events. Whether you want to meet new people in a casual environment, such
as a club bar night, or you want to become more involved in a leather/SM/fetish organization, this Calendar
will provide you with useful information about the various leather and leather-friendly organizations available in
Atlanta, as well as dates for their bar nights and information on exciting special events taking place within the
leather community.
In place of our usual editorial we thought we'd take a few minutes and
introduce you to our new title holders for 1997. This issue will feature
Mr. & Ms. Georgia Leather and Georgia Leather Boy. Our next issue will
feature International Master and slave and Mr. & Ms. Atlanta Eagle.
Joseph Blair, Mr. Georgia Leather, 1997
Joseph Blair is 34 years old, and he has been a member of the Atlanta
leather community for two years. Prior to becoming Mr. Georgia Leather,
1997, Joseph was Southeast Drummer Boy, 1996. During his tenure as
Southeast Drummer Boy, Joseph strove to reach out to, and educate new
members of the leather community. He also co-founded BOLT (Boys of Leather
Together), held fundraisers for a variety of Atlanta's AIDS charities such
as Haven House, Jerusalem House, ChildKind, and AID Atlanta. He would like
to continue to grow as a member of our community and share his knowledge
with anyone who seeks it. Joseph is very comfortable with all aspects of
the leather/SM/fetish lifestyle, be it European, Old Guard or Next Guard.
However, his strongest personal interest is in the Master/slave
relationship. "When I found the leather community, I gained a family that
extends all over the United States, and I am grateful for the friendships
I've formed," says Joseph. "Given all that I have received from my
community, it is a privilege for me to serve as Mr. Georgia Leather, 1997."
Patti Berman, Ms. Georgia Leather, 1997
Patti is 39 years old, and has been an active member of the Atlanta leather
community for 3 years. Prior to living in Atlanta, Patti lived in Tennessee
and Virginia, and was also active in those leather communities. She came
out as a leatherwoman in New York at the age of 18. She finds the
discipline and respect involved in the leather lifestyle to be of primary
importance to her. She would like to bring more women out into the leather
community, and she plans to involve herself in SM education for newcomers
during her title year. Given her number of years in the scene, Patti feels
that experience has been her best teacher, and she would like to pass that
knowledge on to others. When Patti initially came out , there was not a
well-organized and "out" leather community, much less access to SM safety,
so instructing and cautioning others on how to do SM safely is an important
issue to her. During her travels as Ms. Georgia Leather, 1997, she will
promote Atlanta for its large and accepting community, the easy access to
SM education and the excellent as well as safe play spaces that she feels
we offer.
Darwin Holt, Georgia Leather Boy, 1997
Darwin is the first person to hold the Georgia Leather Boy title. He is 26
years old, and he has been a part of Atlanta's leather community for four
years. Working to minimize the discrimination and intolerance has always
been very important to him. Darwin entered the Georgia Leather Boy Contest
in the hopes that the title would allow him to be a sort of "ambassador"
to the gay community. He feels that the non-leather gay community does not
always understand or accept their leather brothers and sisters, and he
would like to foster and encourage education and unity. He co-hosted The
Atlanta Eagle's most recent Black Party, and he would like to participate
in more demonstrations, as well as raise funds for both local title holders
and AIDS charities.
