Tegucigalpa, Honduras
El Picacho
September 1999
El Picacho is a 1,270 meter (4,167 ft) peak north of the city. You reach it by driving up the El Hatillo road. The road up is quite scenic and you notice an immediate drop in temperature as you leave the Tegucigalpa/Comayagüela area. The road passes through upscale neighborhoods with well maintained homes. Several embassies are in this area. At the summit there is Parque de Las Nacionas Unidas (United Nations Park). All of the guide books mention that the National Zoo is located here however that has changed since Hurricane Mitch. The remnants of the zoo are visible: empty cages, the entrance gates, the pathways. The zoo is currently closed and we were unable to find out if there are any plans to re-open. There is a small botanical garden here with labled plants and trees. Also at El Picacho is a small Chinese garden/memorial with a statue of Confuscius. One focal point is a massive statue of Christ which is illuminated at night. This area has some fantastic panoramic views of the Tegucigalpa/Comayagüela area. |
