Chapter one
She saw them coming through the sliding doors. Oh, how long has she been waiting for this day. The day when she'll finally get to meet the person she's been dying to see, since the day after her first concert of theirs. Danielle wasn't nervous. A bit excited, yes, but nothing more. She had been waiting for this moment for so long now. She knew what she was going to do. All five of them came through the sliding doors of the International Airport in Zurich, with small backpacks on their shoulders. Danielle smiled and walked forward to greet him. She came to stand by his side as he and the other lads walked to the exit. About a dozen other fans jumped forward, screaming their names.
"Kian! Mark!"
"Bryan!"
"Nicky!! Shane!!!" Those fans were hovering around the lads. Kian and Bryan started to sign posters, Mark was asked to take a photograph with someone. Nicky was talking to a few fans and Shane was also signing and talking to a few others. Danielle walked calmly to his side, smiling up at him.
"Welcome to Switzerland, Shane."
"Thank you, luv." Shane smiled back at her, still signing, trying to head to the exit, following the rest.
"I've always wanted to meet you, Shane. Thank you for coming here."
"Sure. It's a pleasure to come to different countries and meet the fans." He smiled. The other fans were screaming, running after them, trying to make them stay a little longer. Danielle's pulse quickened. She glanced ahead, realizing that she won't have much time before they all get into the van.
"There is something I'd like to give you." Shane stopped and looked at her. She sounded very serious, he was curious. Danielle pulled out a medium size non-see through, plastic bag and handed it to him. Shane held the bag in his hand and before he had the chance to say anything, Danielle turned around and slowly walked away.
"Thank you!" She heard him shout out after her. She didn't look back, but continued on her way. Shane, holding the bag made his way to the exit, wondering what that girl gave him. He didn't want to open the bag in front of the fans so he went through the exit and got into the van, shutting the door after him.
"So, what do ya have there, Shane?" Kian peered over Shane's shoulder to get a peek in the bag.
"I don't know."
"What are you waiting for, eejit? Open it!" Kian tried to pull the bag out of his hand.
"Hey! Lay off! I'll open it!" Bryan piped in and grabbed the bag from Shane's hand.
"Give that back, Bry!" Shane shouted, trying to get the bag back.
"Na ah!" Bryan said as he dodged Shane's attempt to recover the bag. Bryan opened the bag just then Kian grabbed for it and the bag tore. Out of the torn bag fell a medium-sized teddy bear. It was a pinkish-brownish color. A very normal, yet unusual color for a teddy. It had a pink ribbon tied around its neck. Shane smiled and picked the teddy up. It was soft to touch. Unlike any other teddy Shane ever got.
"Awww....Isn't that just adorable!" Mark chuckled. The other lads giggled and nudged Shane.
"A cute little girlie bear." Bryan laughed. Shane ignored them and sat down again. He looked at the teddy bear, wondering why the girl was so serious when she gave it to him. He dismissed that out of his mind and put the teddy to one side. Soon he fell asleep, too tired from the flight to worry about insignificant things.
Danielle left the airport and drove home. There, she did it. She wanted to give him that teddy ever since the day she saw it in the window of a gift shop. She had no idea why she wanted to give it to him. It was a teddy bear with a pink bow. Who in their right minds would give a grown man a teddy with a pink bow? But it didn't matter what color the bow was, Danielle knew. That teddy was meant for him.
"Shane, Mark, Bry! Wake up!" Nicky shook them. "C'mon. We're here." Shane opened his eyes and got up. Mark and Bryan woke up too and then they all got out of the van. Shane stretched and yawned.
"The teddy!" He said, remembering it was still in the van. Bryan and Kian giggled at Shane and he got back into the van and looked for the teddy. It was over by the window where he left it. He picked it up enjoying the soft furry touch of it. He smiled, and turned around. Shane saw something on the floor of the van. He leaned down and picked up a piece of paper. It was folded up and attached to a black string. He opened the paper and saw a picture of the teddy he was holding. The message on it read:
"To a special person,
who has done so much
without even realizing.
From a very grateful person."
Those words touched Shane deeply. He folded up the paper and got out of the van.
Chapter 2
Danielle was looking forward to the concert the next day. She imagined to herself the songs Westlife were going to sing and how they were going to perform and knew it would be lovely. She just couldn't wait. There was a knock on the door. "May I come in?" Danielle's mum asked opening the door slightly.
"Of course you can." Danielle answered smiling at her mother.
"I know you hate me talking about this but..." Nicole sat on her daughter's bed and faced her.
"No, you are right, mum. I don't want to talk about it." Tears filled her eyes as her memories suddenly came back to life.
"This is gonna be so great!" Marie laughed hugging Danielle tight.
"I know I'm so excited. I can hardly wait." She answered her younger sister. They were both in the car driving to the concert.
"I'm gonna love it! I know I will. Thank you so much for taking me." Marie was so overjoyed. It'll be her first concert she has ever gone to. True, she was almost fifteen but mum and dad never let her out of their sight, let alone go to a all night concert just by herself and some friends. They hardly allowed Danielle to take Marie to the concert. But both of them were very persuasive. Thinking about that made Danielle laugh and wink at Marie. Marie understood what her sister was saying and winked back giggling.
Danielle could still hear Marie's laugh as if it was just yesterday. Nicole hugged her daughter tight as those tears came running down her cheeks. "Are you sure you are going to be up to it, going to the concert?" Danielle pulled back wiping the tears with her sleeve.
"I want to go mum. I need to go. You might not understand, but I just have to."
"Ok, darling. Don't worry about it. I won't talk about it again."
"Thanks mum." Danielle kissed her mother on the cheek and hugged her. "It'll be fine." Nicole rose from the bed and left her daughter's room, she shouldn't be worried about it, everything's going to be fine.
All the lads were very excited to perform here again. The last time they were in Switzerland was about two years ago and they all remembered such an amazing crowd... until the end of the show.
"Remember what happened last time we were here?" Bryan suddenly asked after all the excitement passed away and everyone was quietly thinking to themselves. Kian was on the phone and turned his back to Bryan. When Kian was talking on his mobile he didn't care what was said or going on.
"Yeah, I remember." Nicky said quietly and glanced at Shane, who nodded an agreement but didn't say a word.
"What are the chances of it happening again?" Mark piped up, doodling on a piece of paper. He didn't even bother glancing up at anyone, or really care for an answer. His doodle was looking like a witch on a broomstick and that interested him more. Mark smiled at the picture thinking what a genius he was.
"Nah, I doubt it will." Nicky said. "These things don't happen more than once. People learn from their mistakes. Right?"
"I s'pose so." Shane said, shivering at the thought of something like that happening again.
The crowd was growing every second that passed. All these girls of all ages were standing outside the concert hall, pushing, shoving waiting to go in. Danielle stood within the crowd watching the fans scream with delight, but she wasn't with them. She was far away...
"What a performance!" Marie cried out as the Westlife lads bowed for the last time and then slowly left the stage. The audience was still screaming for more and Danielle could hardly hear herself over the noise, let alone her sister.
"What? What did you say?" Danielle cried back leaning forward, hoping to catch Marie's words.
"It was brilliant! Amazing! Lovely! I need more!" She giggled. This time Danielle heard what her sister said and joined in with the laugh.
"I know! It was great!" A sudden thought came to her mind. "Say, you wanna try to get backstage to try and see them?"
"You think we'll manage to?" Marie asked, hopeful.
"Who knows. We'll never know unless we try. Right?" Danielle grinned and Marie smiled back at her and winked.
"Right." They both left making their way towards the exit of the arena. Hand in hand they walked afraid to being separated because of all the other fans pushing their way to get out first, to meet with the lads before anyone else could.
Someone knocked into Danielle, which brought her back to here and now. A young teenager had been shoved up against her. She just looked at Danielle accusingly as if it was her fault, she didn't even bother to say sorry and turned back to her gang of friends. Danielle didn't mind, she didn't care really. All those young soppy teenage girls didn't disturb her in the least.
"I just luv Nicky!" That girl squealed to her friends. "I'm so gonna marry him."
"I know!" Her friend giggled. "Kian is sooooo dreamy! I just love him. He is soooo sexy!" Danielle didn't bother reacting. There was no point in trying to explain the simplicity of the whole issue to these young fantasizing girls.
Chapter 3
"One, Two, Three, Westlife!" The five lads had their hands on top of one another as they prepared to go on stage and start the concert in front of 10,000 screaming girls. The beat to the song "It'll Never Be The Same Again" started and the lads came on stage one after another singing to the screaming fans before them. Bryan and Mark were singing the opening verse and they were smiling at the fans as they broke into the dance routine for the song. Shane's turn came up to sing and started with the chorus.
"It'll never be the same again
Losing you once was to much to bare
I promise you to love again
If only you knew how much I care..."
He was scanning the crowd. It was the usual crowd. Screaming, jumping girls, waving banners, hats, teddy bears... The thought of the teddy given to him at the airport jumped into his mind as he danced on stage. He glanced to the side and smiled at the crowd. The second verse of the song started and Bryan took the lead there. Shane took the opportunity to crouch down to the crowd on his left and reached out a hand to the screaming - now pushing and shoving - girls he smiled down at them when he saw just a few rows back that girl who gave him the teddy. She wasn't even looking at him she was smiling up at Bryan's singing. As if by magic Danielle turned and looked in Shane's direction and realized he was staring at her. She smiled tentatively. Shane was captured by that smile, almost forgetting to stand up to sing the chorus again.
"It'll never be the same again
Losing you once was to much to bare
I promise you to love again
If only you knew how much I care..."
As Shane got back into singing the song he scanned the audience again, something he did automatically when he was singing. He looked back in that girl's direction but he couldn't find her, couldn't see her face in the sea of screaming fans.
Danielle was pleased she went to the concert. It was fantastic and she enjoyed every second of it, though she wished it had continued just a bit longer. It was perfect she thought to herself. No. It wasn't perfect. There was someone missing...
"Let's forget it, there are too many people here as it is. We'll never get to see them." Marie said wisely.
"Yes. I guess you're right. Come on, let's go home." Danielle said ready to leave the scene of girls running around in all directions looking for a way to get backstage. Both had walked only a few minutes when Marie froze in her place. Danielle looked at her sister and saw she was pointing to her right.
"He's right over there!" She squealed with excitement. Danielle looked to where her sister was pointing and saw what the attraction was. Bryan was there, he just came out of the building to greet some fans. The lads didn't believe in having guards surrounding them at the time. "Come on! Let's get closer!" Marie called and Danielle couldn't do a thing but to follow her sister. Just when Marie spotted Bryan it seemed like the rest of the world spotted him too. There was a sudden rush in his direction. Marie and Danielle were inches away from him and were just about to say hello when there was a renewal of movement when Kian and Shane walked out of the building. It was like a wave, like water gushing over from no where and landing in your face. Marie was gone, out of sight. Danielle screamed...
"Are you alright?" Someone laid a hand on Danielle's shoulder. "You look pale. You ok?" A soothing voice asked. Danielle looked up at a police officer.
"Yes. I'm ok." She tried to smile, then tears spilled over her eyes, streaming down her face.
"Come. You should sit down." The officer said concerned, thinking she was at the concert and hadn't drunk enough water. He didn't want to face yet another case of a dehydrated girl. The officer led her into a cool building, through a corridor. It was suddenly quiet. The girls screams and shouts were drowned, were gone by the protecting walls of the cool building. They continued walking through the corridor till the policeman found a bench she could sit on. "Wait here while I get you a glass of water." Danielle was a bit confused but she listened to the officer and just sat there.
"Marie!" Danielle screamed as she got pushed forward by the swarming crowd, losing sight of her sister. Shane and Kian were shocked. As they came out of the building they saw three girls being pushed down onto the street and out of sight. They didn't expect that.
"Wait! Stop!" The two lads were protesting against the pushing girls. Their shouts were drowned out by the screaming mob. Kian got scared and backed away. All Shane could think of was helping the poor girls that were trampled over. Bryan saw what had happened and he pushed against the fans to try and push them back.
"Marie!!" Danielle's piercing cry was right in Shane's ear. She was crying hysterically and didn't see what was going on around her. It seemed suddenly out of nowhere five policemen shoved their way through the crowd and started pushing everyone away. Shane was in shock but he saw one of the girls lying on the floor. He jumped forward into the confused crowd.
