"Are you not gonna answer it then Shelly?" Lindsey called over.
"Uuuhhh," I said still fixated at the screen on the ringing phone. Could it really be him? He hadn't contacted me since that fateful night back in the summer. My phone just had the number on the screen-no name, which meant whoever it was wasn't in my address book. Mark wasn't. "uuhhh yeah," I said looking up at Lindsey still holding the phone loudly singing 'No Matter What,-I'd had it specially done, much to the disaprovement of people on the surrounding tables. I took in 3 deep breaths before finally pressing the green button, and holding it up to my ear.
"Hello," I said boldly.
"Shelly?" Came the reply on the other end. It was him-that strong Sligo accent was so distinguishable.
"Yeah, look Mark, I really don't think," Gasps came from everyone surrounding me, "Mark?" they were all saying completely confused. Danni started shaking my shoulders,
"Mark?" she was lip-synching. I nodded back trying to make out what he was saying at the other end.
"Oh my god Shelly, it's so good to hear your voice, I'm really sorry about everything, me not,"
"Look don't worry about it," I interrupted, annoyed. "There's nothing to say Mark. Anything that even started ended that night we were out celebrating."
"No, Shelly, that's when," I didn't let him finish, and kept on going. "I've got on with my life and it looks as though you have too-I like the name by the way, catchy. Like I said that night, good luck, I wish you guys all the success in the world, and I really think everything's best left at that."
"No Shelly!" I didn't even let him finish before hanging up.
Mark kept on talking for a few seconds before realising he was talking into a dial tone, and Shelly had gone. "Shelly?" He said. There was obviously no reply. He took the phone away from his ear and punched the red off button, frustrated. "She hung up on me, I can't believe it," said Mark shaking his head, talking to no-one in particular.
"I take it this is Shelly we're talking about here," enquired Kian being unhelpful to say the least.
"Who else?" mumbled Mark before dropping his phone to the floor and storming out of the room, annoyed and upset. Kian started to follow, "Leave him mate," called Shane stopping him in his tracks, "give him a while to think things through before we all go hassling him."
"Yeah, you're probably right," replied Kian whilst shaking his head at the scene he had just witnessed.
"Way to go Shelly!!" was the response I got, when I plonked my phone on the table.
"That guy really needs to work on his timing!" Joked Hannah.
"Yeah," I just mumbled, trying to work out why I had just done what I had.
"Aaah I sense someone's still not feeling any better," started Lindsey.
"This calls for one thing and one thing only-MORE CHOCCIE CAKE!" We all started laughing, but I couldn't help feeling guilty-from Mark's voice on the phone I gathered he wouldn't be sitting down re-joying to chocolate cake, far from it infact.
