chapter seventeen
'WHAT?' This time was my turn to be surprise. I thought he was only joking. Wooww, hang on, hold on, this is too much for a day.
Mark was hanging his head down by now. I finally managed to open my mouth and talk after a few seconds of disbelief. 'But you don't know me Mark! I mean, how can you... I'm a messed up person. Very messed up. Why do you like someone who is so messed up?'
I heard a soft knock on the door. Nicky's head poked in. 'Hungry lovebi... Hey, what's wrong?' 'I think you better stay out of this Nicky mate. Hang on, gimme a second.' Mark seemed really nervous. 'Fair enough. Hey, are you okay Em?' 'Yeah, yeah. I'm fine thanx.'
I heard the door closed. I was sure Nicky knew that I wasn't alright at all. 'Emily, please listen to me. I want to help you. Call me crazy but somehow, deep down inside, I know that you're not a messed up person. You're just having a bad time.'
'You are crazy Mark! Is that it? You like me because you want to help me? You don't have to like me if you want to help me y'know. I don't even think I know myself anymore.' At this point I turned my head away from Mark. Didn't dare to look at him anymore. How could he?
Mark held my hand. 'Maybe you're right. Maybe I don't know you at all. Maybe I don't even deserve to have a taste of your love.' 'Love? I don't even know what is it anymore, Mark! For goodness' sake, I don't!' I still had my head turned away from him.
He slowly kissed my hand then I heard him standing up from his chair. He then kissed the side of my forehead. I heard his footsteps walking away from me. See, everyone was just going to leave me. Sooner or later.
