I woke the next morning to Shane shaking me gently.

‘Wakey-wakey!’ He smiled. ‘I’ve got something here you might like to see.’ I blinked and sat up. He handed me a copy of the Sun. I woke up very quickly.

‘Oh my God!’

‘That’s what I said!’

Westlife’s Shane declares love to 4,000 fans

Last night, Shane Filan, lead singer of Westlife, declared his love of his new girlfriend on stage at Glasgow’s SECC.

You could almost here the hearts of his teenage fans breaking as he admitted to dating the girl seen with him in yesterday’s papers.

‘I have fallen head over heels in love. Totally and utterly.’ He went on to tell fans that he’d never felt this way before.

The lucky girl is 17 year old Harriet Robson, from Edinburgh. She and Shane only met last Monday, although he is rumoured to have kept every letter she has sent him, and the two had been in regular correspondence for a long while.

Speaking to fans after the concert, the general feeling was one of good wishes.

‘I’m upset, but I’ll get over it! He may be a pop star, but that doesn’t mean he can’t fall in love. As long as Shane’s happy then the fans’ll be happy too.’ Sarah, 13.

‘Who cares? Shane’s a great guy, and I hope he’s happy.’ Anna, 15.

‘Of course, I’m jealous - who wouldn’t be! But we all knew the guys dated, and it was only time until one of them got into a serious relationship.’ Isabel 16.

‘Well, Nicky’s been in a relationship since the beginning of the band, and that hasn’t lost him any fans, so why should it for Shane? Anybody who stops liking them just because Shane’s off the market is pathetic!’ Rebecca 15.

Speaking to Shane at his hotel, he told our reporter that he loved Harriet and wasn’t scared to admit it. When asked if the age gap was a problem, Shane said ‘It’s only a number, isn’t it? Who cares?’

The Sun wishes the both of them the best of luck in their relationship.

If you wish to send a message to Shane and Harriet, e-mail the Sun at the usual address, and all messages will be passed on.

‘Well, it could have been worse.’

‘How do you mean?’ Shane looked baffled.

‘Well, I mean, it’s only one paper.’

‘Well, not really.’ Shane glanced across to the desk. On top was a pile of newspapers.

‘Please don’t tell me we’re in all those papers.’ Shane didn’t say anything. ‘Well?’

‘You told me not to tell you, so I’m not saying anything!’

‘You’re joking?’

‘No way. We seem to be top story at the moment.’

‘So, what are we going to do?’

‘Well, apparently, there’s been an even bigger crowd of fans outside the hotel than normal this morning. And some of them have been here all night! Kian went and spoke to some of them earlier, and they all want to see us! Do you feel like braving the masses?’

‘As long as I can have a coffee first!’

Twenty minutes later, I was feeling slightly more awake, and Shane and I headed downstairs. As soon as we stepped out of the lift we could hear the screams. Someone must have spotted us, because they all started waving and yelling to us. Shane took my hand. ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. If they give us any grief we’ll go straight back in.’ He gave me a peck on the cheek, and we went through the doors. The noise was so loud, considering there were only about 100 people there. Shane led me across to one group of fans that had been outside the hotel practically all week. The crowd surged forward, but the barriers kept them back.

‘Shane! How are you?’

‘Great, thanks. You?’

‘All the better for seeing you?’ The girl smiled, and pushed a piece of paper into Shane’s hand. ‘Can you sign this for me?’

‘Sure. What’s your name?’

‘Kelly.’ She turned to me. ‘You must be Harriet. Lucky cow you are!’ She leant across and gave me a hug. ‘Take care of him, otherwise you’ll have all us guys after you!’

‘Don’t worry, I will.’

‘Here’s your autograph.’ Shane gave her a kiss, and smiled for her camera. ‘See you’s later.’ We moved on down the crowd.

‘Shane! Harriet! Smile!’ A girl took a photo of us. ‘Can you sign this for me?’ She handed Shane their latest single.

‘What do you think of the song then?’

‘What the single?’ Shane nodded. ‘It’s great. I love it. I hope it goes to number one of Sunday!’

‘So do we! It’s looking good.’ It would be their 14th number one if it made it. ‘Have you been to any of the concerts?’

‘Yeah. I was there last night. Heard your little speech!’ She grinned. ‘It’s cool Shane. No one cares. We’re just glad you’ve found someone. But y’know, if you split up, there’ll be plenty of other fans queuing up to take your place!’ We all laughed. Shane and I were walking on clouds.

After about 40 minutes of wandering around the crowd, Shane and I headed back into the hotel. On the last step, he paused and turned round. He motioned for the crowd to be silent, and after a second, he started speaking.

‘I just wanna say thanks for coming. When you admit to having a girlfriend or whatever, you never know how the fans are gonna take it. But you’s have all been great. You all being here today is just the boost that the two of us needed! Thanks, and enjoy the last two concerts.’ He kissed me, and the cameras flashed all around us. It wasn’t only fans, several photographers had turned up too.
