chapter ten

All that afternoon, Kian and I sat and talked. And kissed. Later, we went into Sligo and picked up a pizza, a bottle of wine, and a video. Back at the house, we fed each other slices of pizza and settled down in front of the TV to watch the film.

After he’d put the tape into the machine, Kian settled down on the sofa next to me. He put his arm round my shoulders, and I rested my head on his chest. It all felt so natural.

Kian stroked my hair. ‘Okay?’

‘What do you think?’ I smiled up at him.

‘Me too.’

I sat up so I could look at him properly. ‘You mean it?’

‘Of course. You shouldn’t have to ask me.’

‘I know. I’m sorry, it’s just hard, you know.’

‘Yeah, I know.’ We fell silent again, but a couple of minutes later, Kian spoke. ‘Hannah?’

‘Mmm?’

‘Want to stay here tonight?’

I grinned. ‘Has anyone ever told you that you ask a lot of stupid questions?’

‘Is that a yes?’

‘Yeah.’ I kissed him. ‘Can we watch the film now please?’

He laughed. ‘Sure.’

Later that evening, I called Liz, so she wouldn’t worry. Bryan picked up the phone. ‘Hello?’

‘Bryan?’

‘Yeah.’

‘It’s Hannah, can I speak to Liz please?’

‘Yup, I’ll just get her for you.’

A minute later, Liz came on the line. ‘Hello? Hannah?’

‘Yeah.’

‘And were would you be exactly?’ I could hear her grinning.

‘Still at Kian’s. Look I’m going to stay here tonight.’ I waited for her reaction.

‘Really?’

‘Yeah.’ I changed the subject. ‘What’s Bry still doing there?’

‘I’ll put it this way, I don’t think Rachel’s favourite is Shane anymore.’

I laughed. ‘Keep an eye on her for me.’

‘Yeah, ‘course. So, you and Kian huh?’

‘What do you mean, "Me and Kian"?’

‘You know what I mean. Can I just say one thing?’

‘What now Liz?’

‘I told you so!’

‘Told me what?’ As if I didn’t know.

‘You and Kian. I was right.’

‘Yes, Liz. You were right.’ We hung up, and I sat back down. Me and Kian. Liz was right wasn’t she?
