if I let you go (2)

chapter eleven

As we started the interview, I realised Shane didn't recognise me. I had my hair tied up and it was dyed a slightly reddish colour. I avoided eye contact with him and tried to carry on as best I could. About ten minutes into the interview the front door came crashing open and Steven ran into my arms, crying. Karen was rushing behind him. She said that he'd fallen over and wanted to come home. After she'd left he finally stopped crying.
"You okay now?"
"Mum, I fell over." He was still hugging me.
"Does it hurt?"
"No."
"Good."
"What do we do now?"
"Well, I have to work for a little bit more."
"But, what about me?"
"You can watch a video, yeah? And then when I've finished we'll get your song. Okay?"
"Yeah. I love you mum."
"I love you too sweetie. Now go." I laughed as h went off. "Sorry, he must be tired, he was up all night with a cough."
"He's a sweet kid," Kian said.
"Yeah, I know. He's great. It's a good job for him that he looks more like his father than like me."
"He's a singer, but," I took a deep breath. "He doesn't know he's got a son."
"Do we know him?" Bryan continued.
"Yeah, I should think so, but I don't really want to talk about it. Not until he knows at least."
