if I let you go (2)

chapter twenty

Shane's parents were great. I didn't feel nervous with them at all and I also met some of his brothers and sisters, it was all so great. Steven loved all of the attention, everyone was playing and dancing with him, he was so happy. At about half five, Shane said he wanted to show me something. He took me to an absolutely gorgeous house, just outside of the town, with a lake and stables and everything. I immediately fell in love with it and the beautiful horses. It was all so perfect, and the view was fantastic.
"So, what do you think?"
"It's beautiful. I love it, you're so lucky."
"Yeah but it's too big. Too big just for me anyway. It needs something more, like kids running through the rooms, and a woman's touch, definitely a woman's touch." We were walking around the lake, it was a cold November day and I shivered.
"Here, have my cost."
"No, I'm fine. You'll get cold if I take it."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, positive." We started to go back towards the house and it started to rain. No, it didn't stop to rain, it was teaming down. When we got back to the house we were soaked. Shane couldn't find the key and I couldn't help laughing. Something fell out of his pocket and onto the wet gravel. It was a small box, green velvet and I wiped some of the dampness off, not that it did much good.
"Hey Shane, you dropped this." I opened it to see a beautiful ring, an engagement ring. It was a gold, thin band with three diamonds and two emeralds in a line. It looked strangely familiar to me. "Oh wow. Who's the lucky girl?"
"What?" Shane saw what I was holding and a look of horror came across his face. "Oh damn. You weren't meant to see that. Well, not yet anyway."
"Why?"
"I was gonna give it to you later. When we got back to ma's house."
"This is for me? Shane, this is an engagement ring," I was confused.
"Yeah, it's the one from the shop in London. Remember?" he took the box.
"Here, let me do this properly," He got down on one knee and took my hand.
"Rachel, you're the only one I've ever truly loved. Will you marry me?"
"Oh my God. Shane, are you sure you want to be asking me this?"
"I wouldn't be asking if I wasn't sure."
"Oh, um," I looked into his eyes and saw through to his heart and it showed he was speaking the truth. I smiled and bit my lip, "Of course I will Shane. I love you." Shane got up.
"I love you too." We kissed and it was just like our first kiss except much more passionate. I was so happy, I didn't care that it was pouring down, it made it that bit more romantic. It was the best birthday of my life.
