if I let you go

chapter one

"MELLIE!" Susan called out while running towards her, "Wait up, will ya?" "Yeah, what?" Mellie stopped until Susan reached her. "Wanna go out? I will be so free throughout the weekend, too free if I might say," she said, trying to catch her breath. "Yeah sure, that will be OK. I won't be doing anything much throughout the weekend anyway," Mellie agreed, "Come on or we'll miss the bus." They ran out to the nearest bus stop and hopped onto the bus.

Mellie and Susan have been best friends for years, ever since Mellie entered the same school as Susan. Mellie, Melanie Prince, is a 16-year-old, 5'6", hazel-eyed brunette. Her family moved from Manchester to Dublin seven years ago when her father got transferred by his business. Most of the time her parents were away on business trips, leaving Mellie and her sister, Sarah, on their own. Susan, Susan McFadden, has blue eyes and blonde hair. She's the same age as Mellie and a bit taller than her. She's living with her parents and an older brother, Bryan, who's 18.

The girls stopped at a bus stop and went to a McDonalds. "Can I take your order?" a tall, chubby lad asked. "Hi Bryan, you look like you're enjoying your job here," Mellie teased him and giggled. "Hah, funny! Quick, my shift will finish soon. What's your order?" he smiled. Bryan is Susan's 18-year-old brother. He's currently working at McDonalds. He's tall, a bit chubby, and looks a bit like Susan with his blonde hair and blue eyes. He took down their order and dashed off to get their food. After paying, the girls sat down at a table near the window and chatted. Bryan, whose shift had finished, joined them a couple of minutes afterwards.

"Have I told you that I went to an audition a couple of days ago?" he said, with a mouthful of fries. "Really? What kind of audition? Are you going to play another old fat lady and shave your legs again?" the girls giggled. Bryan shot them a look, "NO! It wasn't for any play. It was for an all new Irish boyband ..." The girls burst out laughing so hard that Susan almost choked on her fries. "Bryan, excuse me, a boyband? Are you sure?" Mellie asked, still laughing badly. He nodded and smiled proudly, "Me and a couple of mates went to the audition for a laugh. Who knows, I might be the next Nick Carter." "Yeah right" Susan giggled, "My big brother being the next Nick Carter. Just shoot me!" "What kind of boyband is it again?" Mellie asked, trying to sound interested. "It's Louis Walsh's new boyband, y'know ... Boyzone's Louis Walsh!!! From what I've heard, there's this boyband from Sligo called IOU. They used to be a six piece but now they're a three piece. I don't really know what happened, but they held an audition to look for some new members." "And you entered ... how nice! Did you have to sing anything?" Mellie asked. "I sang Backstreet Boys' 'Get Down'," he grinned, "Nicky sang Boyzone's 'Father And Son'. I think we did well. OH YEAH, GUESS WHAT? IOU once opened for Backstreet Boys' concert here, isn't that great?" He jumped up and down out of excitement. "Just watch, next year I will open for someone HUGE," he said dreamily. "Hey ... that's Nicky," he said, pointing to a lad who was coming towards them. "Who?" Mellie asked. "Nicky. My mate. He also went to the audition. He was the one who sang Boyzone's song." "He looks like Ronan," Mellie murmured, "He's ... gorgeous!"

She watched Nicky as he approached them. He was a small, cute lad, with floppy blonde hair and a cute smile. "Hello, I'm Nicky," he introduced himself to Mellie. "I'm Melanie," she said, shaking his hand. He took a seat near Bryan, "I went to that audition place today." Bryan raised his eyebrows and leaned forward, "And?" "And," Nicky's voice faded out and he looked down at the table gloomily. "Oh," Bryan said faintly, trying to hide the disappointment in his face, but it was just too obvious. "I'm sorry, mate" Nicky said, playing around with the leftover food and the scattered tissues on the table. "I'm sorry to tell you that you have to say goodbye to all your friends at McDonalds, cos we're going to rock the popworld!" he screamed out excitedly. "Huh?" Bryan froze, "you mean ... aaaaaarrgh!!" He and Nicky jumped up from their seats and hugged each other. "WE MADE IT! WE MADE IT!" They hugged the girls, more like squeezed them cos it was so tight. "We made it! We made it!" they yelled, still freaking out. "We have to go there now to take care of some stuff. Come on," Nicky dragged Bryan out. They turned towards the girls. "Is it OK?" they asked. "Sure, have a great time and congratulations," they both said. The lads dashed off quickly, leaving the girls in a state of shock. "Wow, he actually made it. And we were just mucking around about that," Susan said, but Mellie wasn't listening. "Mel, Mel, Mel!!!" Susan called. "Huh yeah, what? Yeah?" she said, coming out of her daydream. "What are you thinking of?" Susan asked her. "Nicky! He's gorgeous!" she said, staring out the window.
