chapter eighteen
Sherry walked into the middle of the room, breathing deeply. She was best friends with Sarah and always tried her best to do what she could for her friends, this was going to be a biggy though.
Slowly, she lifted her top and revealed her bra to the tourists and the tour guide. Mouths fell open wide and jaws hit the floor.
Meanwhile Sarah, thanks to Sherry's diversion, had taken her chance to leave and ventured off the locate Charlotte Flemmings's bedroom. It didn't take her long to find as she knew exactly where it would be. Once inside the room, she closed the door behind her, remaining as quiet as she could possibly be.
She tiptoed slowly over to the grand wardrobe that stood on the opposite side of the room. She kneeled down next to it and while running her finger along them, counted the floorboards going out to the left of it. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It had always been her lucky number and she now realised why.
She pressed the left side of the floorboard and it tipped down into the floor. She then pulled up the whole floorboard using the other end that was now sticking up in the air.
She lay down on her side and reached her arm under the floor. She grabbed onto what she had been looking for and pulled it up. After brushing away the dust and muck that had gathered over the centuries on the metal tin, she opened her rucksack and put the tin gently in the top.
Sherry stood outside the mansion shivering while she waited for her friend to emerge from the house. She'd been thrown out of buildings before and this time was no different with the exception that she hadn't just done it for a laugh, but instead for a pretty good reason in her opinion.
Sarah walked casually out of the mansion and on spotting her friend huddled under a tree, sheltering from the rain ran towards her, a huge smile on her face. "Well?" Sherry asked "You'd better have found it!" "Don't worry, I did" Sarah reassured her.
Sarah started walking back the way they'd come. Sherry grabbed her arm and pulled her back "arn't you going to show me then?" she asked, excited at it all. "When we get back to the guest house" Sarah replied. Sherry sighed and they headed back to the bus stop, they'd got off at that was in the middle of nowhere.
Sarah looked back only once, she said her goodbyes to the house in her head. "Well you've finally got closure, Charlotte" she thought to herself "There's nothing left of you there now".
Dripping wet, Sarah and Sherry flopped onto their beds in their bedroom back at the guest house. Sherry grabbed Sarah's rucksack as Sarah took off her soaking wet jacket and shoes. She took the metal tin out of the bag and placed it on her lap as she took her own jacket off.
"Is this it?" she asked Sarah who was now trying to light their fireplace. "Yeah" Sarah told her. "Looks dead old doesn't it?" Sherry remarked. To which Sarah replied "That's because it is!"
Sarah sat down on her bed and took the box from Sherry's lap. "I wish Bryan was here" she said sadly. "Ohh shut up and open the box! He'll see it soon enough!" Sherry replied. Sarah sighed at her friend and shook her head.
She found the opening and tried to open it, to her dismay it was wedged tightly shut. "Maybe it's a sign!" Sherry muttered quietly. Sarah completely ignored her.
After loads of digging and picking with fingernails, the result of which was Sarah breaking nine nails in all, the box finally became loose. Sarah slowly lifted the lid, but as soon as she'd opened it she shut it again.
Sherry was on the edge of her seat "Why'd you shut it for?!" she asked flabbergasted. "Maybe I should wait for Bryan, it does involve him too" Sarah replied. "Stuff Bryan! I want to know what's in the box!" Sherry told her excitedly. Sarah sighed and slowly opened the box.
Inside there was a piece of yellow paper. It was rolled up and binded shut with a wax imprint. Sarah tore open the paper to find it was a letter. It read;
My dearest Benjamin,
I fear we will not be together much longer. There are forces trying to tear us apart, and I fear that they will soon succeed. Because of that reason I must tell you what I have been meaning to tell you for some time. You have suspected it and I have declined to comment. I cannot avoid the topic any longer. You have been correct in suspecting me of being with child. The child is of course yours, I know you will not doubt that but I must clarify it. I hope and pray that this will be good news for you and that you will rejoice in it with me. We will one day be together my love and if it takes forever I will find you wherever they may send me. I will never love another and am certain you will not. Please never forget that. No matter where they send me and our child, I will return to you and we will be one.
All my love and affection forever
'Lotty'
Sarah and Sherry were in tears as they reached the bottom of the page. "I remember everything!" Sarah said out loud. Sherry turned to Sarah and put her arm around her shoulder.
Bryan lay on his bed in his hotel room in Paris and groaned. He was aching to get home. There were 3 days left of promotional work left and Bryan was sick of it all.
The other members of the group were at the hotel bar. Shane had told him he'd talked to Sherry the day before and that she had told him that both she and Sarah were fine.
Bryan had asked if Shane knew where they were but he'd had to tell him that the one really irritating thing about mobile phones was that the person on the other end could be absolutely anywhere.
Shane hadn't told anyone about Sherry and the baby, he was planning to wait until Sherry told him everything was alright and that he could tell everyone.
Suddenly Bryan's phone rang on the bedside cabinet next to him. He quickly answered it, it was Sherry. "Where are you? Are you both alright? Is Sarah there?" he asked impatiently. "She's not really feeling very well at the minute, she wants you to come home. We're flying back tomorrow." Sherry told him.
"What's the matter with her?" a concerned Bryan asked. "It's nothing life threatening, just get home as soon as you can" Sherry calmly replied, "look I have to go ok, bye". And with that she hung up the phone.
Bryan jumped off the bed and grabbed all his belongings together and crammed them in his suitcase. He didn't care about the work anymore. "There are some things that are far more important" he thought.
Passing the lads at the bar Bryan headed for the exit on the ground floor. Not caring about the press who was eagerly waiting outside the hotel he hailed a taxi and proceeded to put his suitcase in the back of the car.
The other members of the group ran out of the hotel after him. Mark grabbed his arm as he was about to get into the car. "Where do you think you're going?" he asked sternly "We've worked hard to get here!"
Bryan shook Mark off his arm "Don't you get it?" he told him "When you fall in love, nothing else matters. All this fame, fortune is nothing if you don't have someone. Well I do, and I've stupidly left her behind. And I'm not going to do it again!"
Mark finally understood, he nodded "Well then... You have to do what's right". He held his hand out and Bryan shook it. Their rift between them was finally healed.
The other lads said their goodbyes as Bryan got in the car. "Tell Sherry I'll be home soon" Shane told him. "I will mate" Bryan replied, closing the car door behind him.
