chapter six
Sarah left the hairdresser's after having all her long, wavy hair cut off. It had been dramatic but she had needed a change. Her hair was now quite similar to Posh Spice's and she felt great, like a burden had been lifted from her shoulders.
She walked home (which wasn't far) and on the way walked past an 'Our Price' record shop. Westlife's new release 'I Have a Dream' was out now and there were posters everywhere, including the record shop's window. She gazed at Bryan longingly, wishing she had never started dreaming of him in the first place. It had been a week since she'd had the last one, about the funeral. Westlife had been everywhere, on the telly, in the news (because they were tipped to be Christmas no1), in magazines, newspapers. Sarah couldn't escape them.
Bryan was flying home to Dublin in a couple of days, for Christmas with his family. He was overjoyed as he'd been away from home for most of the year and he'd missed them terribly. He was still haunted with dreams of her. Though now nothing ever happened in them. The others seemed to tell a story and now all he saw was her face. She had no expression, and occasionally would be crying. Not blubbing, but having a single tear on her cheek. He had missed her too, the real girl. If only he'd rushed at the airport he'd have been able to sort out what was going on.
Shane and Kian were sympathetic as was Nicky, on occasion. Mark however didn't buy a word of it. "It was all in your head" he'd tell Bryan "Sometimes we have premonitions of people we're going to see or meet but that's it". He hurt Bryan's feeling a lot by saying this and he didn't even realise it. Mark was sensible, sometimes too sensible and not opening his eyes to anything unexplainable or slightly unusual. It took a lot more evidence to convince him of anything. He didn't mean to hurt Bryan but he did and they had many blazing rows because of it.
Sarah hadn't told anyone about her dreams, especially the ones she'd had since discovering who her dream bloke was. She thought she'd gone crazy, they'd seemed so real and yet quite distant from her usual self. Sherry was worried, after returning from her trip to New York she'd found Sarah inattentive, withdrawn and extremely quiet (the complete opposite of Sarah usually!). Sarah told her nothing was wrong but Sherry didn't buy it. She tried to probe Sarah as much as possible but to no avail. It didn't stop her though, just made her more determined to find out what was going on.
Sarah was spending Christmas with her family too, in London. She wasn't very excited about it at all, as she felt she'd grown too old for Christmas. She never got as many presents as she seemed to remember getting as a kid, and when she did she was never as excited as then either. Costs had gone up and she found Christmas extremely expensive. The day was always very repetitive and she couldn't tell the difference between last Christmas and the Christmas 3 years before.
Her job however was going great. Being a receptionist was never something she really wanted to do, just something she'd fallen into to get away from being unemployed.
Her company had been producing a big British film that was doing great in the cinemas. She had gone on location while it was filming many times and had made friends with some of the costume designers on set. She'd told them about her passion for costumes and stuff and they'd given her advice on how to achieve her goal.
She was now taking a dress making course in the evenings in the city and was doing great, still working at the production company during the day. She had been recommended a costume design course at a college near her and planned to go there after she'd finished with the dress making. Everything was looking up.
Suddenly, because she wasn't looking where she was going, she bumped into someone on the busy, snowy street. She apologised and looked up. To her horror she saw Anthony smirking at her. "Oh great!" Sarah groaned sarcastically and tried to walk past him. "Wait!" replied Anthony grabbing her arm and pulling her back "Don't you even say hello? That's very rude you know!".
"So's groping someone on someone else's coach, it didn't stop you though did it!" Sarah answered back angrily, tugging her arm back. This was the last thing she needed, she hadn't seen him in years and had hoped she never would again. "You still angry about that, or is it a stupid question?" Anthony asked back knowing full well anyone would be. "You're the only thing around here that's stupid," Sarah fired back "thinking you're worthy of talking to me. You're below pond scum, you know that!". "Ohh, saucer of milk for table 4!" he sarcastically replied "So, are you seeing anyone?" he asked.
Sarah wasn't but didn't want to feel as though she was a complete failure by not having a boyfriend (cos she did really). She hadn't had one in ages and knew if she told Anthony that he'd make a joke about no one wanting her, he was that cruel. "Yeah actually, I am." She replied. Sarah's head was whirring, trying to think of a possible beau she could be dating. "Do I know him?" Anthony asked. "You wish!" Sarah snarled "He's in a boyband, watch the Christmas TOTP, he's going to be Christmas no1!" "Who's that then?" Anthony asked "Take That?".
Sarah smirked "Don't be stupid, no he's in..." she glimpsed over at her shoulder at the Westlife poster in the window "Westlife". Anthony groaned "Not that bunch of muppets! They're all gay!" He turned and looked in the window of the shop "Go on which one is he then?". Sarah pointed to Bryan. "He's definitely gay! What a tosser!" Anthony smirked back "how'd you meet him then?" Sarah used her imagination extremely quickly "My mum knows his mum and we got together 2 summers ago". Anthony didn't doubt this as he knew Sarah's mum was Irish and so it was possible. "Ah, well I spose someone had to have you, and I suppose it's best it's someone like that so other girls don't miss out on decent lads" Anthony rudely replied.
"What did I ever see in you?" Sarah asked "You are such a revolting little creep. Look at you!". Anthony looked down at himself, not sure what she was on about as he believed himself to be the height of perfection. "You're what, 5 ft tall! Your hairs all greasy, you have no upper lip, your head looks like a taxi driving down the street with the doors open, you have evil eyes, one eyebrow going across your face that looks like a catapillar, you have no muscles, legs like a girl, and no bum! You have the bare faced cheek to insult Bryan..." Anthony interrupted "Oh, his name's Bryan. Is he like Brian from 'The Magic Roundabout? Is he a snail, a bit slow!".
Sarah grabbed him by the scruff of his collar and lifted him onto his tip-toes "You dare insult him again, or me and I swear I'll rip your arm off and beat you with it!". She then pushed past him and walked away. Anthony yelled after her, in shock but trying to keep the upper hand after being threatened by a woman "You missed a great wedding. You'll probably never have one, look on the bright side though at least you won't have to spend any money on one! We went to Jamaica for the honeymoon!". Sarah yelled without looking back "Yeah, well I feel sorry for the Jamaicans!".
As she got through her front door she sighed, flinging her bag on the floor and plonking in front of the television. TOTP was starting and Sarah knew who'd be on. As expected, Westlife eventually appeared. "You are mine though!" she thought to herself as Bryan sang his heart out to the lines "I have a dream, a fantasy. To help me through reality. And my destination, makes it worth the while. Pushing through the darkness, still another mile".
