chapter six
Ooh, it’s my turn to talk again. I was afraid that I’d never get my say in this one. Laura was just plain pissing me off. OK so venturing to England wasn’t as pleasant a trip as I thought it would be. You’re probably wondering why I’m complaining. You’re just like what does she have to whine about. She spent New Year’s Eve with Abs Breen of all people. Back to me being pissed. Laura and Shane made me want to puke. She just met the guy and she’s doing it with him in an elevator. Oh, c’mon. And then they don’t have the decency to keep their hands off each other in front of me. I’d never seen her act this way. Usually she was acted more of a smart ass than anything else, but now she’s going into the ho business. I guess she figures that it’ll be nice to go home and tell everyone that she had sex with a popstar that she’ll never see again. Or maybe they would see each other again. He seems to really like her. It’s not like he’s using her or at least not yet.
Abs and I chilled and watched fireworks at Piccadilly Circus while Laura got her groove on with Shane. Personally I would have rather have been me in this situation. Then we had some drinks even though I’d just recovered from my hangover from the night before. I’d never done anything like that two days in a row. It was absolute insanity and when I woke up I could have sworn the room was spinning. I still had fun though.
And then of all things I have to walk into a room where Shane has Laura straddled on the bed. Did I really look like I wanted to see that? No. I don’t think so. And let’s take a moment to go back in time. Remember when we were on the plane and I said I liked him? You do? Well that’s probably why she’s going for him. Oh well he didn’t seem to care for me anyway. And what happened to Kian? Did he just fall off the face of the Earth? I guess so. After seeing Shane and Laura, I went for a stroll down the hallway just because I wanted out of that room with them.
After returning, Laura had changed clothes and was sitting there with him. He was on the phone with someone.
"Damn it, Anto! You mean we can’t even have the first day of the new year off?" There was a long pause.
"Fine. I guess I’ll see you there. Bye." He hung up. "Doesn’t he understand the meaning of day off? He scheduled an interview with Smash Hits, the asshole!"
"That sucks. You don’t even get today off," Laura replied.
"Well. I better be going since I don’t have any other clothes. Listen I’ll call ya, ok? What’s your number?"
She proceeded to give him her pager, cell, and the hotel number. As he ran out the door, they kissed again which made stomach turn even more than the alcohol I had consumed from the previous two nights. After he left, she closed the door and gave me this cold stare.
"What was that all about?" she asked.
"Well... Do we have enough time in the universe for me to tell you how much of a ho you’re being?"
"I am not being a ho. It was New Year’s and we were trapped in an elevator. What are we supposed to do? We couldn’t get drunk. Sit there and talk to each other?"
"I don’t know. It’s not my fault you ohso conveniently forgot something."
"Ohso conveniently? Excuse me and I probably got the elevator stuck myself too, right?"
I didn’t know what to say to that, so I started about this morning.
"And this morning I walk into the room only to see you two messing around. Why don’t you go stay with him if you’re gonna do stuff like that. We’re sharing a room and I didn’t need to see that."
"You’re a good one to talk. It’s okeydokey for you to go out and get drunk two nights in a row with two guys you hardly know. Yeah I bet. And you’re condemning me? Who knows what you did? Probably not even you."
"I know what I did. And it wasn’t what you did. And what about Kian? Honestly Laura what are you gonna tell him?"
"I don’t know. I gotta think of something. And how about this? At least I haven’t been in the British tabloids Miss Me and Scott from Five’ll go and barf off a balcony into the streets of London."
"I honestly do not want to fight with you," I said coming to my senses. "We’re on vacation and all the things that we do over here stay here, ok?"
"OK. Fine. We’re not gonna bring this up again. You’re right. Now is not a good time for this. Not everything that we do has to stay over here does it?"
"No. You know what I mean."
"No one would believe it anyway."
"That’s true. We have evidence though, don’t we?" So the fight ended as quick as it started. Now that that was solved, things would be a little peachier.
"What are we doing today?" I asked.
"I dunno. We went shopping yesterday," Laura said and started playing with the clock radio on the dresser. "95.8. 95.8. There it is. Capital FM."
"What kind of station is that?"
"They play all kinds of pop stuff."
A voice came on the radio saying how they were giving away two free tickets to see Steps and A1 at Wembley Stadium tonight.
"Call when you hear the touchtones," the voice said.
"Let’s go for it," Laura said.
"Who are they?"
"Do you remember that song 5, 6, 7, 8 that I played and you said how cheesy it was, but then you said you liked it?"
"Yeah."
"Well that’s who sings it."
"Oh, ok."
She was already dialing the phone while talking to me. The song ended and all of a sudden the dj said,
"So how does it feel to be going to see Steps on their sold out arena tour?"
I watched Laura’s eyes light up. We were going. No doubt in my mind.
"Damn good," she almost screamed into the phone.
"Did I mention you’ll also get to hang out with Faye, Claire, Lisa, H and Lee after the show?"
"No way! Thank you so much."
"Sure. Stay on so we can get your info."
Well I guess we’d be spending tonight at Wembley Arena. As soon as Laura got off the phone, she started screaming.
The phone rang and cut our celebration short.
"Hello? Shane? Yeah, I just won the Steps tickets. Yeah, it’s tonight. You want me to go to Sligo with you tomorrow? I don’t know. You kinda caught me off guard." She paused for a few seconds. "You’re leaving tomorrow? At what time? Twelve or so?" she asked and looked at me. "Hold on. Let me tell her, Shane."
She put her hand over the receiver.
"Bryan’s going home to Dublin and wants you to go with him since he missed being with you New Year’s."
OK. Like I was going to make a decision like that in about two seconds.
"Go," Laura said. "I’m going with Shane and then we’ll meet back up here."
"OK. Tell him I’ll go," I replied reluctantly.
"She’ll go. And I’ll go with you. We’re gonna meet here tomorrow around eleven then? Eleven? OK. See ya then. Bye, Shane."
She hung the phone up.
"I guess that’s settled. Shall we go get some new clothes for the Steps concert?"
"Sure. Let’s venture."
We went back to the shops on Oxford for some more snazzy threads. I was wondering about all the luck we were having. It was insane. When was it going to run out? I hoped it wouldn’t be all at once. I hoped it wouldn’t run out ever. We went shopping and bought new clothes. We went to Capital FM and picked up the tickets. By that time it was time to get ready to go again.
* * *
My turn again. We won tickets to the Steps concert. I am so glad I had that inspiration to tune into Capital at that time. Not only were we going to the show we were going to meet them too. How ‘bout that? We arrived at the concert at around 5:00. There were already lines, but we were able to skip those since we were meeting them before the show. I was kind of getting used to meeting famous people since we already met Adam Rickitt, Abs and Scott from Five, Ben from A1, and all the Westlifers. And maybe we’d see Ben again tonight.
"Isn’t this exciting?" I asked.
"Yeah, but one prob. I have no idea what they look like."
I had to go through Top of the Pops and show her which ones were which. I just couldn’t understand how you could be meeting someone and not have a clue who they were.
"Lee’s hot. He’s a definite Daniel."
"Yeah," I said reluctantly. For some weird reason, I felt committed to Shane. Like I shouldn’t be talking about how gorgeous another guy was. It was one night and probably meant nothing, but I couldn’t bring myself to think about any other guys.
