chapter seventeen
Later that day we all sat down for the Christmas dinner. Shane finally cleared his throat and stood up, "Me and Nikki has something to tell yous." He slowly went over to my chair and took my hand, "We're getting married." Everyone went silent for a few seconds but then we got a big cheer. I was overwhelmed about the got reception I got and the fact that I was accepted into the family that fast. I knew that some family members had been suspicious about my real intentions but it all seemed to have gone. "And," Shane continued, "we're having a baby." We hadn't told any of our families before, but especially Shane's mother was very happy to get the news.
Later on when I sat on the sofa, Shane was gone out, Mae came and sat down beside me. "I'm so happy you're getting married," she confided, "you're probably the sweetest girl Shane's ever been going out with." I smiled, "Thank you." We continued on chatting for a while, and I bet Shane wouldn't have been happy to hear some of the things Mae remembered from his childhood!
After a while we were interrupted when the man himself entered the room. "Mum, will you excuse us for a while?" "Yes, of course." Shane took my hand, "Come, I've got to show you something..." We went up to the room set aside for us, and Shane led me to the window. "Will you look at that?" It was a magnificent scene with the snow-covered town, the blue moonlight and the stars, "It's beautiful." Shane put his arms around me, "Almost as beautiful as you..." I turned around to kiss him and I was so happy, Shane had been in a very romantic mood the whole evening, and I was so happy I didn't even question it.
Next morning I woke up early. I looked at Shane, he had his back turned to me. The knowledge that I was actually looking at my future husband overwhelmed me. Over 6 months I had gone from being a fan, to his date, to his girlfriend, to his ex-, back to being his girlfriend, and now... I was his fiancée, soon to be wife and mother of his first child. How did all that happen to me? I certainly didn't know, but someone, somewhere must be watching over me. I slowly ran my fingers over his back, "Shane?" "Mmmm..." "I just wanted to see if you were awake." He turned around. "Anything special on your mind love?" "No..." "Here, give me a kiss..." I kissed him and he snuggled up close to me. "I'm so happy to have you..." I didn't answer, but I knew I felt the same. I loved Shane more than I had ever loved anyone else, and now we only had the hardest thing left, to prove our love to the world. We couldn't predict the outcome and just had to kept our fingers crossed, hoping that his fans would support us. So far, everything had gone well.
We needn't have worried, the lads were down in London for promotion the following day and I went down with them. The moment we came into the airport they were mobbed by fans. I moved aside, together with Lorraine and Georgina who both went down as well, I knew how annoying it was for fans when the stars had their partners hanging on their arm all the time. After a while Shane called me over. "Come here love, I think those girls know you so I'll leave you here for a while, now don't give out all the stories my mum's told you..." I smiled at him, "I promise." I did know the girls, they were part of the mailing communities and we got on great. Lorraine soon joined in and pointed out that they had always supported her so with them behind me I didn't need to fear anything.
After a while it was time for the lads to leave for all the photo shoots, interviews, TV/Radio shows and stuff they were doing. Shane commented that he'd have to be careful not to answer he didn't have a girlfriend just out of habit. Of course he didn't. It all went perfectly fine. I spent most of the time with Lorraine and Georgina as we all got on well. I was glad they were there, cos I normally never found anything to occupy my time with.
The reaction we got from the fans were lovely, and when we went home a week later we were both happy. So far, no one had tried to split us up, which was very positive!
chapter eighteen
It was a warm summer morning, and a very special day indeed. Well, at least for me and Shane, who were getting married. We had friends and family present, no tacky photographers from posh magazines paying millions to get the exclusive photos, and happily enough we were left alone from reporters as well. Of course, there were a few, but not many found their way to the little church outside the town of Sligo were the reception took place!
I had a few of the girls over that I got to know through the various mailing lists. After all, they had always been there for me, plus I had once promised to. Of course it had all been a joke back then but... it looked like I was the lucky girl who had had the dreams come true. I sighted, those were the days...
"Nikki!" I turned around. "Oh, hi Mae!" She rushed over to hug me, "You look lovely darling!" She was closely followed by Lorraine, who advised me to use waterproof mascara. I smiled. Lorraine and Mark had married just two months earlier, and I bet she knew what she was talking about.
A while later my bridesmaids arrived. It had taken absolutely ages for me to sort out which four girls would be lucky enough to get the job. Of course Ciara was a clear choice. She was the first Dublin girl I had got to know on the lists, plus it was with her I went on my first Westlifing trip. Oh, and Shane always liked talking to a fellow horse lover! Then Jenny... she was also from Dublin and it wouldn't be any problems for her to get up there. I would have chosen my little sister, but she was 7 years younger than me, so instead we had her to go in front of the little group. So, still 2 places left. The Dover lot was down and I managed to pick Ally out of them. And, weirdly enough I had Luce as my fourth choice. Why? Well, we were still friends after all, and Shane still hadn't given her the excuse she deserved... after all, it wasn't only me that had been cheated!
Hugs were exchanged between us, we went through what we had to do, and then just chatted for while. We were all nervous and giggly. We got picked up by a horse carriage, Shane had insisted on including it after he got hold off a couple off white horses and, well, I didn't complain!
The ceremony went smoothly. We had the other four lads to sing a fantastic acapella of More Than Words. When we came out of the church Shane hugged me. "I'm so happy..." he whispered. I couldn't talk cos I could feel my tears coming, again. At least it was of happiness. Of course, I didn't need to say anything, he knew what I felt. He kissed me softly. I just felt like I was living a dream as everyone cheered. Mae and Peter came over and trusted our little daughter, Mae Maria, who'd been born 4 months earlier to us. Shane gently took her in his arms. I smiled again as he started his baby talking with her. I had never doubted that he'd be a perfect dad, and he was, and I hoped he'd be just as perfect as a husband, actually, I didn't doubt that either.
