chapter fourteen
For a moment nobody made a noise. Then Nicky and Mark started to clap in their hands. Esther smiled at them and went back to her seat. Nicky gave her a friendly hug. "That was really nice. Bet he liked that..."
The carriers started to lower the coffin into the hole. Round it were basically all Ki's close friends, and his family. Esther felt that she had to say something but she couldn't find the right words.
Beside her Shane started to sing softly. "Goodbye to you my trusted friend. We've known each other since we were nine or ten. Together we climbed hills and trees..." Everyone joined in. "We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun..." Although it made her cry, Esther found it the only appropriate way to say the last goodbye.
Afterwards there was a coffee table planned in Shane’s house. Walking through the chambers filled with people she came to the door that led to the garden. After looking through the glass for a while she went into the garden. She didn't feel like having company now...
walking in the empty backyard she reached the gates of the empty meadow. The heaps of their last snow fight were still not levelled... She climbed over it and just stood there. Her thoughts went back, one year, two...
Suddenly something cold and wet hit her. Surprised, she looked round and saw it were the lads who had come out. "Gotcha now!" She picked up a handful of the fresh fallen snow and threw it back at Bryan as hard as she could...
