the guy in the towel

chapter two

It was 9.30 when we came down to the bar. It had taken some persuasion but finally Jenny had agreed to come along. As we were scanning the room we saw Bryan in the back waving at us. We went over to him. He introduced us to his friends.

‘This is Shane, Mark, Nicky and Kian.’

‘Hi, guys’, we said with one mouth and sat down.

‘Guys, this is Anna and Jenny. The girls from this afternoon that I just told you about.’

‘Hi girls, it’s VERY nice to meet you’, they said.

‘I think we owe you a drink Bryan’, I said. ‘What are you drinking?’

‘Same as you’, he said with a twinkle in his eye.

‘OK.’ I went to the bar to get the drinks.

‘Why are you here then, Shane asked. Do you live here or what?’

‘No we’re on holiday’; Jenny said starting to think that this wasn’t such a bad idea after all. ‘We needed to get away from everything for a while. You know what I mean? What are you guys doing here then, I can tell that you’re not from around here, am I right?’

‘Yeah, we’re from Ireland, Nicky said in his best Irish voice. Can’t you tell?’

‘Sorry.’

‘I’m back! This is for you Bryan, the same as I’m having.’

‘What is it? He said suspiciously, as he smelled it carefully.

‘Try it, it’s good I promise….’

He carefully tasted the drink.

‘It’s…. It’s…. It’s orange juice, he said surprised.’

‘Yeah, what else could it be? I said smiling. ‘I don’t drink.’

A while later

Jenny and Bryan have started to order in drinks for everybody, over and over again, but it’s mostly they who are drinking. Kian and Nicky have left us on the count of being too tired to stay any longer. Myself I’ve been busy with flirting with Mark… and Shane. What’s a girl to do? How could I choose which one to flirt with? I thought ‘better flirt with both of them, that way I’ve doubled my chances.’

‘So you’re bricklayers you say, isn’t that quite a tough job?’

‘No, not really Shane said with a smile. But it takes it’s man, if you know what I mean.’ At the same time I felt a hand on my leg. It was Mark. I was beginning to realise that I was going to have to make a choice, at least a temporary one or else there might be a fight. I decided that Shane was going to have to step aside, at least for now…

In the meantime Jenny and Bryan had talked and laughed together. They were really hitting it off…

‘Anna, I think I’m going up to our room now, she said. Are you coming too?’

‘No, I think I’m going to stay here for a while if that’s OK with you.’

‘Sure, goodnight all.’

Jenny started to make her way through the room. She hadn’t gone very far when Bryan shouted to her:

‘Wait, I’ll join you, I’m also going too my room. ‘Night all.’
