chapter five
"Any news?" Kian asked. "None yet, but it doesn't look good." Angel said. Tears started to well up in her eyes so she turned away quickly so he would not see. "Angel, he'll be fine." Kian said giving Angel a huge hug. Both of them knew that Kian was only trying to comfort Angel but it seemed to be working. They stayed like that until Shane interrupted them.
"Where's Sarah?" Shane asked worriedly. "She's gone out for a breath of fresh air. She's not taking it very well." "Well she wouldn't be," Kian replied "I could have helped, I was closer to Nicky then she was but." Kian trailed off and stared at the floor.
"It's no one's fault except the person that threw the rock. Did the police catch her?" Shane said trying to change the subject from the fact that Nicky was in intensive care battling for his life. Nobody wanted to answer the question cos they all ready knew the answer. The girls had fled the scene as soon as they saw that Nicky had fallen to the floor. None of them quite knew what they had hoped to achieve but at this very moment none of then cared. Not only could they be losing a great friend but also the person who hurt Nicky may never be punished. "I'm going to go find Sarah. Make sure you keep us informed ya?" "Sure". Angel said.
Shane headed in the direction of the exit and could already see Sarah leaning on a railing outside staring with her back to him. Shane was split on whether to leave Sarah to her own thoughts or to show her that she wasn't alone on this one. Shane carried on walking and when he got to Sarah he place a reassuring hand on her back. Sarah didn't stand up, in fact she didn't respond in any way. It was as if Shane wasn't even there. There was a long uncomfortable silence, which was only broken by the siren of an ever-nearing ambulance.
"It's all my fault." Sarah finally said. "If I had never been there, Nicky would be fine, doing some interview some where. But instead he's here." Sarah trailed off as the tears choked her. "It's not your fault. Nicky loves you." Shane said trying unsuccessfully to stop her blaming herself. Sarah stood up straight, turned her back and leaned on the railing again. "Come on you know that you all blame me. You don't want to say it but you all wish Nicky had never met me." Sarah said with tears streaming down her face.
Shane stood in front of Sarah and said "Believe me when I say we don't. We're worried about Nicky but we are all really worried about you too. We see you as a friend not just Nicky's girlfriend. We think both you and Nicky should have all the happiness in the world and you only got that when you were together. Why would any of us regret that." Sarah could see that Shane was being sincere. Sarah hugged Shane and whispered "Thank you".
"SARAH, SHANE come quick, it's Nicky." Mark said running towards them. "Wha?" Shane asked by which time Sarah was already running down the corridor. Sarah didn't want to lose him. She loved him, he loved her. It wasn't supposed to end this way. Sarah slowed down as she reached the room. What had happened? Had she got there too late to even say goodbye? She ran into the room. "Oh my God Nicky".
