Bryan's Interviews
Big Hit - Issue 11, September 1999

Do you have any phobias?
I'm afraid of the band not working.

When was the last time you embarrasse yourself in front of a girl?
I tripped on stage and that was in front of hundreds of girls!

What makes you cry?
Losing a friend or getting hurt by a girl.

What are your parents' names?
Mariead and Brenden.

How did you feel when you first saw yourself on TV?
Shocked, it was horrible. I didn't realise I was so ugly.

What junk food do you eat?
Anything. I eat everything...chocolate, chips - even both at the same time!

What's the scariest thing about your job?
The pressure of singing live and keeping your voice intact. If my voice went tomorrow, my career would be finished.

Do you think you look like Nick Carter?
No, I think my hairstyle is a bit like his used to be, but I don't think I look like him. I've met him and I respect the Backstreet Boys a lot.

Can you ski?
No.

Name a concert you'd love to see.
Michael Jackson or Mariah Carey.

If you were Ricky Martin for a day, what would you do?
Probably snog every woman in the world!

How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
About half-an-hour.

What's your most common expression?
"You dutz". If someone does something stupid, we say, "You dutz". It's a Westlife thing, we made it up.

Have you ever painted your fingernails?
Why would I do that?

Who do you miss most when you're on tour?
My mum. I call her every day.

What's your worst habit?
I don't know. Picking my nose?

What's the coolest thing about Australia?
Sydney Harbour is beautiful.

Who's your favourite cartoon character?
Bart Simpson.

What colour socks do you usually wear?
Always black.

What's one thing you'd like to ask Geri Halliwell?
We have the same hairstylist and when Geri saw me on a music show she called me saying, "You've got to cut your hair. It's too long". And I said, "Get lost. You cut your hair!"

Bryan McFadden...on post-baby sex, Mariah's chest and naked fans

So, Bryan, father of baby Molly, have you been up to your knees in nappies lately?

Oh yes, I've been changing plenty of nappies, but getting up in the middle of the night is difficult - I just feel knackered and once I'm up I can't stay awake.

You recently married Kerry Katona - what first attracted you to her?

Everyone says it must have been her boobs, but I didn't even know she had a great body until about a week later. It was her face and eyes and the fact she's so cute and bubbly.

What did you find sexiest about Kerry when she was pregnant?

The bump, which was so sexy. She was radiant.

Do you ever do a Guy Ritchie and ask Kerry not to wear certain clothes?

I have said things like, 'I don't think that top suits you', and sometimes it doesn't because Kerry does have quite a large chest - if she wears low-cut tops, she doesn't always look her best. That look doesn't turn me on. It's much sexier just to see the shape of a woman's breasts through a top - it leaves more to the imagination.

In the video for Against All Odds, your eyes had to be averted from Mariah's cleavage. Was it embarrassing when you saw her afterwards?

It was just a glance. Actually I was looking at her legs! When I saw Mariah the other day, I said, 'You wouldn't believe how much **** I got for looking at your tits'. She said, 'Serves you right for looking!'

You must get to meet so many gorgeous women. Doesn't Kerry get jealous?

Not at all. Our security normally won't let girls near us, which is fine - all it takes is for a journalist to see us chatting to a girl and they'll get the wrong idea. Kerry and I trust each other, but I don't want to take any risks that might put stress on our relationship.

Who gets the most female attention in Westlife?

Nicky and Shane have girlfriends, and I have Kerry. Mark plays the field most. When Kian goes out, he just likes to have a drink with the lads, whereas Mark likes to chat up girls.

But you've had your fair share of female fans throwing themselves at you, haven't you?

Yes, one night I came back to my hotel room to find two naked girls in my bed! I had to get security to throw them out. I still don't know how they got there.

That would be most men's wildest dream! Weren't you even slightly impressed?

If I were single, then maybe, but I'm not into girls wanting to have sex with me because I'm in Westlife. If a normal guy saw two girls in his bed, he'd think, 'It's my lucky day!' But even when I was single, if I'd done anything it would have been all over the papers. I was in shock and just stood there for a second, thinking I'd got the wrong room. When I realised, I was like, 'Who the f*ck are you?"

When was the last time you had a good sex session?

Last night - and yes, it was really good.

So it's not true that new parents go off sex?

No, after the baby's born it takes a while to get back into your old routine, but we're there now!

You said you wanted to diet before your wedding, did that happen?

I was only joking when I said that. I am the way I am and I don't care what other people think!

When A Man Loves A Woman - Bryan
from Westlife Official Magazine Issue 7, 2002

BRYAN

What first attracted you to Kerry?

I loved her personality. That's the truth. I mean, obviously, she's gorgeous but you could tell she's a lovely girl on the inside. Her personality got me straight away!

When was the first time you saw her?

I first saw her when we were doing a TV Hits roadshow in Brighton together. Westlife and Atomic Kitten were performing on the same bill.

And did Kerry fancy you straight away?

Ha ha, no! I asked her out and she said no! Now she says that she did like me really, we were all chatting her up at once. She was a bit overpowered, I think. She's no idea who we were either - which was cool.

How did you eventually ask her out?

I asked her out then but she said no. But then she rang me to invite me to a party in her hotel.

Did you have a first date?

No, we just met up whenever we could around our work schedules. You can't call meeting at a TV studio a proper date, but we did spend lots of time together. Location wasn't important!

Was there something about her that made you think "This is the girl for me!?"

Definitely. I couldn't figure out why I didn't want to spend any time away from her.

It must be extra hard being away just now?

Oh yeah. The phone companies love us, they do. We keep in contact twenty four hours a day. Right now, I don't ever turn my phone off cos of the baby.

What's the best compliment Kerry has given you?

She's always talking about my eyes. She says they match blue tops so I'm wearing a blue top today! It's odd, one thing she said she loved was my love for music. Early on, I was playing songs from our album and I was excited about them. And she liked that I was passionate about something.

Do you have anything of Kerry's that you carry around with you?

Yeah, I have a little pouch, which she got in Japan two years ago. It's a love charm - you aren't allowed to open it! (thinks) What else? I have my engagement ring, and I have photographs - one from TV hits two years ago and my favourite, where she's wearing a woolly hat. My auntie also gave me a blessed medal to protect Kerry.

How did it feel when you moved in together?

Erm, we moved at about three o'clock and by four o'clock I'd gone out again to do a concert in Belfast! We hadn't even unpacked, but it was great to be together. It didn't feel strange cos we've been together on the road for ages.

Does Kerry ever ask you what you fancy for dinner?

We have chicken curry every night from the takeaway down the road! They know our order!

What does the future hold?

I hope everything goes well with the baby, that Kerry and I are happy, we have a good life and that Westlife carry on being successful.

Westlife Official Magazine Issue 8/2002 - In Too Deep? with Bryan

In Too Deep? with Bryan

How are you?

I’m on top of the world! I’m - we’re fantastic. Everything is going so well for us right now. I love my family life and I love the band. It’s really funny, Kian actually said something to me the other day which really struck a chord, deep down. He said that I’m the richest person he knows, because I have Kerry and Molly now. And nothing can ever replace the two of them.

Everything has changed for you since Molly was born....

Absolutely. Yes, in fact, everything has been thrown all over the place! Things are starting to settle down a bit now, though. We’re getting into the swing of things, we’re loving all our time together. I think every now and then I stop what I’m doing, and I realise exactly how lucky I actually am.

Are you getting used to the sleepless nights?

Oh, there have been a few of them, believe me! But it’s not too bad at all, waking up to a baby isn’t as tiring as I thought. If anything else was making that much noise I’d be annoyed, but when you walk over and pick her up, well, how on earth can you be anything but happy?

Is Molly a good baby?

She is a good baby, she only usually gets up once at night, which I’m told is great for her age. And I’m lucky, y’know. Kerry usually sees to her, she picks her up and feeds her, sends her back to sleep. I’m useless! I get up, and go to see her, then I fall asleep before the baby does!

What was the week when Molly was born like?

Well, we were so excited. I’d be standing talking someone and then I’d think ‘ I’m a daddy!’ Everybody came to visit. All day, every day, there was a constant stream of people coming round to the hospital and then to our house to give their congratulations, and see the Molly for the first time.

Did the other lads give Molly nice gifts?

Yeah, lovely gifts. Kian got a Winnie The Pooh rug, Shane bought a Winnie The Pooh rocking chair, Mark bought a minature version of the statue of Molly Malone in Dublin, which was really cool. Nicky bought a bangle and necklace for Kerry. All the lads have been great.

What was it like when you when you first took the baby into your own home?

It was amazing. We closed the door, and just stood there. Just thinking “there are three of us now, we’re family, we’re together in everything”. We were very proud when we took her into her little nursery. It was all very strange.

How did your mum and dad and Kerry’s mum react?

They love it. Absolutely. My mam, I think, reckons she’s a mother all over again - she just loves looking after the baby. It’s given my parents a new lease of life, they’re with us loads and they feel young again having a baby around the house! Of course, it’ll be handy when we need them to babysit as well, haha!

You celebrated Molly’s birth in a Dublin nightclub.....

That’s right, a bunch of us went out to wet the baby’s head at Lillie’s Bordello in town, a couple of days later. It was a brilliant night, something else I’ll always remember, I think! All the Irish football team were in the club as well as us, and by the end we were singing with Robbie Keane, Roy Keane and Niail Quinn too, in fact, all the Irish players. It was surreal, that night! And when I turned around, there was the singer Moby sitting at the piano and singing along!

Wow! Did you invite all those people down?

No, it was weird, it was a real party night in the city, the atmosphere was amazing, and everyone just happened to be there. There were big things happening that weekend - I had the baby, of course, plus it was the Irish world cup match against Holland (which we won) and U2 had just played at their homecoming show at Slane Castle. Everyone was in the mood for a good time.

How is Kerry now?

She’s on great form, and she’s loving being a mum, she’s so good at it, a complete natural. She’s looking great as well!

It was Kerry’s birthday a few days after Molly’s birth, how did you celebrate?

It was quite quiet, but we had a good time. We didn’t want to go out and leave Molly so soon, so we had a party in the house instead. And I bought her a car for her birthday, a Toyota Yaris.

And now, your paternity leave from Westlife is over, are you glad to go get back into swing of things?

Well, obviously I miss Molly and Kerry when I’m not there, but it’s good to be back on the road and working hard as well. To be honest, it’s easier to see Molly now because when I was at home I had so many errands to run and things to do. I was too busy to concentrate! Now when I’m in the house, I’ve nothing to do but just look at her! It’s good to be back in a routine.

How are your plans for your wedding going?

Oh everything’s well under control. Not too long to go now, y’know, and it’s starting to hit home - I’ve just been to the tailors to have a fitting for an outfit, cos we’ve been trying to decide what I’ll be wearing. I want our wedding to be a very smart, fairytale affair.

And what will be the venue?

We’re going t o hold the wedding in a castle in Ireland.

And for after-ceremony entertainment?

We’ve had very long discussions about this one, we’ve thought of the Commitments, and Dr Hook, but we have agreed on one thing for sure - Dane Bowers has agreed to come down and sing for us, he’s going to be singing an Another Level song, ‘From The Heart’. It was in the movie ‘Notting Hill’, which we both love. It will be really orchestral, and we’ll have even have a choir for the harmonies.

Have you decided what to feed the guests yet?

Oh yes, very important. The guests will be having Christmas dinner for the main course, and then at around midnight, just when everyone starts getting the munchies, we’re laying on burgers and chips!

Has Kerry chosen her dress?

Yeah, she had a fitting the day before yesterday, she knows exactly what she’s doing but as tradition goes, I’m not allowed to know about it!

Are you nervous?

Yeah, I am nervous, but it’s what I want, and I can’t wait for the day to come!

Good Luck Kerry and Bryan!
