Kian Egan...on stripping off and getting in fights

As a single man, what kind of women do you find irresistible?

I like dark hair, dark eyes and white teeth but I'm also a big fan of the Scandinavian look - natural white blondes with blue eyes and a year-round tan.

What kind of clothes turn you on?

I used to like girls in miniskirts, but I'm not into that now. I like nice slick black trousers, with a slick shirt and proper high-heeled shoes - a ladylike image.

Describe your ideal date...

A weekend in a log cabin with a nice fire. We'd mess around in the snow, then go back to the log cabin and have a nice dinner and a glass of red wine. I'm good at cooking Italian food, but I'd make whatever she wanted.

Pick a song you think would be good to have sex to...

Hmm, I'm thinking Frank Sinatra's 'My Way', just for fun!

When did you last have a good kiss?

About two weeks ago, with this girl I met in a club after a concert. She was a nice girl, we snogged for a while but we didn't exchange numbers. You know, it wasn't anything intimate.

When you're with a woman, how do you feel about stripping off?

I'm not too shy about it, but I feel awkward of she does. I don't want her to feel she has to be naked, only if she's comfortable with it.

Are you a lights-on or lights-off man during sex?

I suppose lights off with a little light in the corner so you can still see the person. I don't like pitch black.

What's the sexiest dream you've ever had?

I don't recall ever having a wet dream, if that's what you mean! But when we were in Paris with the record company I fell asleep on the couch and had a dream about the singer Toni Braxton. I dreamed we were sitting in the hotel having a cup of tea and then we ended up snogging. Very strange.

J from Five once said that Westlife are wimps. Any truth in that?

We're not wimps, we're just not stupid. When J said that he was just acting all tough. We get on quite well with him now. It was about three years ago that the whole thing kicked off between us and Five. J was saying 'You're a bunch of pussies!' and we just said 'We're not stupid, we're not having our faces plastered all over the papers saying we're fighting with Five.'

Do you often get men picking fights with you?

Yeah, a few weeks ago in Stockholm we walked into a bar and our security overheard these guys saying in Swedish 'There's Westlife, let's start a fight with them for a laugh'. The area was reserved for us anyway so our security asked the guys to leave.

So how different are Westlife behind the scenes?

If people knew Westlife for what they are it'd be a different story. We're not clean-cut little boys who sit at home and do what mummy tells them. We're your average 21-year-old guys. We like to have a laugh and live our lives. If our manager says 'You're not going out because you have to be up at 7am tomorrow' we turn around and say 'Look, we're going out!' We never have the paparazzi following us because they think there are no stories. That might change when they read this...

When A Man Loves A Woman - Kian
from Westlife Official Magazine Issue 7

KIAN

What does your ideal girl look like?

I don't really have one. But I do like blonde hair and brown eyes because I think that's quite unusual and attractive. Girls with a bit of sparkle.

What personality should your dream girl have?

She's be easy going, but she's also be serious at times. She'd have to be understanding because I go away so much. I dunno, just an enjoyable person I can be myself with.

What's the first thing you notice about a girl?

You look at a girl as a whole - how she looks, how she's dressed, how she holds herself, how she acts. Later on your notice details. I think eyes can make all the difference.

Were you a schoolboy romeo?

I went out with girls. How many? Quite a few!

At school, how would you have asked a girl out?

The way they did it in our school, you always just got your friend to do it. There's less chance of getting upset that way and the girls not embarrassed either! It took quite a while to get more confident.

How would you approach someone you fancy now?

I don't know if I would. I got more confident as I got older but since I've been in the band I've lost that confidence again. I think I talk to girls like I'd talk to anyone, go up and make polite conversations with them, see what they're like. No dodgy chat up lines.

Have you ever been in love?

Yes. I think I've been in love three times. My first love was when I was fifteen and we broke up when I was sixteen and a half. Took a while to get over that one!

What would be your ultimate turn off?

If she picked her nose, that would do it! Really bad taste in clothes, like um, urh urgh urgh! Open-toed shoes with tights is the most disgusting thing ever.

Where would you go on your ideal date?

The zoo is a good place to go because you get real personality coming through. And then maybe a meal and a walk along the beach in the evening.

When did you last go on a hot date?

That was… three and a half weeks ago. It was fun, but nothing came out of it.

Are you seeing someone now?

Now, I'm not. Whatever you may read in the paper, none of its true. I'm most definitely single!

Would you ever date a fan?

Have done. A fan to me is someone who enjoys music. I'm a fan of a load of different bands. We would be quite alike, you never know!

KIAN on-a-soapbox

Larks! Seems even the lovely coiffeured Kian gets the hump once in a while...

Kian, just what makes the Westlife lads so darn spesh?

We don’t try to be something we’re not. A lot of bands change their sound after their first album. Then, when they realise they’ve made a mistake and go back to how they used to sound, nobody’s interested. We keep it real - we’ve found a formula that works for us.

What’s your beef with other pop bands?

A lot of new bands get a hit and reckon they’re all that - Westlife have never been like that. It’s not just the band that make a number one happen - bands have all sorts of people who help them make it.

Do you ever get cheesed off with the pop biz?

Well everybody gets tired, but I don’t feel like that much ‘cause I love the chase of it all and the idea of getting Westlife to the next level. There’s always a new challenge.

Who do you talk to when you get the hump?

Mostly it’s the boys I turn to, ‘cause we’ve all been through the same things. I might feel down one day, but they’ll say, “What are you talking about? We’ve got all this good stuff happening.” And they’re right - of course they are!

What’s the hardest thing about being Kian Egan?

We’ve been to places in the world that make you thankful to have a plate of food in front of you, let alone a Porsche, so sometimes I feel guilty about having money. I’ve bought my folks a house, but when you see mates from home struggling to pay the bills, it feels a bit weird.

Do you feel like you’ve missed out at all?

We’ve all had to grow up quickly. We deal with stuff - lawyers, accountants, contracts - that no other 21-year-old has to deal with. Other people our age are going off to college, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

And what about laydee action?

Well, a lot of girls can’t handle my lifestyle. A girl I was seeing over the summer couldn’t get her head around the fact that we couldn’t walk around Dublin without getting mobbed. I’ve had girlfriends since we started the band, but there’s no point in telling anyone unless we’re 100% serious. But I’d like to settle down - it’s one of the most important things in life.

Finally, do you get in a huff about all the split rumours?

It’s utter rubbish. None of us want to leave - why would we? We’re at the peak of our careers and we’ve just put the best album we’ve ever done. Just don’t believe everything you read.

Westlife Official Magazine Issue 8, Jan 2002 - Hotmail with Kian

Hotmail with Kian

He had his haircut - but why? Was it all down to public pressure? Kian sets the record straight.....

If you could cover any rock song which would you choose?

Wow! Good question! There are so many to choose from but i reckon I’d go for....Bon Jovi, ‘Always’. Do I sing it in the bath? Oh no, and to be honest I’m never going to sing it on stage either, because the vocal part is way too high for me. But I do love it, it’s a fantastic song.

Were you upset when people had a go at your hair?

No! (laughs nervously) it was more of a joke than anything, wasn’t it? At the end of the day if people don’t like it you have to decide whether to change it, or ignore them, or live with the stick they give out to you. I dunno, I suppose I did end up going with popular opinion, but let’s face it, it’s hardly the worst insult in the world!

Do you keep all your stage clothes?

Of course we keep all our stage clothes, we’ve kept the clothes from all our major performances as well as all the things we wore on tour. All the outfits are in storage at home so we can take them out one day in the future and show them off, saying to our relatives "and we wore this one when we were number one!" We’ll all have cases of clothes in the attic when we’re old.

How should a girl try to get your attention?

It’s not that difficult, just come up and say hello! So you just have to, I dunno, do normal things! The best thing a girl can do is make eye contact, then say hello, take it from there. That way even if sparks don’t fly we’ll still have a nice chat, isn’t that how most things start?

What does the bedroom of your new house look like?

The house isn’t ready so I haven’t moved in yet - I’m still at the buying furniture stage. I think the decor will end up pretty simple, to be honest. A nice bed, a bright room, lots of natural sunlight and light wood. Oh yeah and a nice stereo and TV of course, plenty of entertainment!

Have you had the chance to visit any family around the world?

Yeah, I have, I’ve family in Australia who I’ve seen over there, and my brother lives in Sheffield so when we go to Sheffield I hang out with him, it’s great. I also have distant relations in America but they’re very distant, I don’t know where they live!

What would you like for Christmas?

I’d just be really happy to see my family move into the new house and just be really settled there. There’s nothing I need as a present at all. It’s more important to me that we can have great time together than anything else.

When you get fed up and lonely on the road who do you call up for company?

My mammy, of course. Or just speaking to anyone in my family will usually makes me feel better, whatever.

Does seeing Bryan with Molly make you broody?

I’ve plenty of time for that yet, I think! Bryan is fantastic with Molly - but I don’t think I’m ready for all that yet. I think I’m still a bit too young to have a baby, and I want to try to be able to enjoy Westlife a bit more. And have lots of late party nights, hurrah! I’d have loads more responsibility on my shoulders, it’d better for me to wait a few years yet before I think about settling down.

What does your answer phone message say?

It doesn’t say anything, it’s very plain, it’s just your woman from the phone company saying “you have reached the number blah de blah please leave a message”.

What are your hopes for 2002?

What am I hoping for? That’s easy! Just to get our second tour under way, to do really well, enjoy the new house, and make Westlife even more successful!

In Too Deep? with Kian

How are you enjoying this whole fame thing?
I don’t think of it as the whole fame thing. I enjoy the band and the buzz of it. I enjoy my job. The only bad side is that people could write untrue things in the press. And sometimes they twist what we say to make it sound more sensational or whatever. But I don’t really care what papers say about me.

What is the hardest part of celebrity?

It can be annoying when we don’t get peace. You’re public property and as soon as you walk out of the door everyone wants a piece of you; there are always interviews and press and TV shows to do, you never feel as though the record company thinks you’ve worked quite hard enough. It can be hard to have that pressure on all the time but you just deal with it.

You’ve been able to buy great stuff. Is it exciting?

Material things become less of a want after a while. You get to the stage where you have money to buy nice watches, clothes and jewellery, so you do. Then once it’s on your wrist you realise it’s just a watch like any other, except it has a fancy name. Designer jeans are just jeans with a fancy name. But I’m grateful for our success, and the opportunities it’s given us, especially about where money is coming from. (thinks) I hope.

Do you accept that things will cost more now?

It costs more because we can’t go to cheap hotels or sit in busy restaurants any more because of the security problems it could cause, so there’s a certain price to pay. But we’re charged a lot more for what is still the same food at the end of the day. I’ve just ordered a bacon sandwich and it’s cost ten times what it would cost to make at home. For that price, I’d expect it to get up and dance!

Are you getting used to the finer things in life though, for example, the designer clothes?

I could go back to wearing normal clothes. I think I really could. I'd be a lot more picky about my clothes now than I used to be, but I'd still wear them. You just have to know what to look for.

Do you still enjoy it as much as you did at the start?

Yeah, I do. It's become a job to a certain extent - but it's a job I really love to do. Of course, I have good days and bad days like anybody else because every job has its downside as well as its good points. But at the end of the day, this is how I make my living; this is how I'll make my money.

Now you're in the public eye, do you try harder to keep your personal life private?

Yep. I approach things very differently. Nobody knows anything about my personal life, basically. People don't know if I'm in or out sometimes. If I'm in my hotel room or somewhere else. I could be in a club, I could be at the cinema, I could be in some girl's house, nobody knows.

Are you more likely to meet would-be girlfriends in your job?

Oh no, much less. You meet girls but you meet girls who are just interested in the band, it's as simple as that. Girls are afraid to approach you. And if they're not, the chances are they might not have the best motives. I can tell who's genuine. It's easy to work out. But I won't say how you can tell.

Aren't you getting better at approaching girls?

No, worse. (aren't you in the perfect position?) No way! It's not like that. It's just...I've lost my confidence in some situations. I suppose if you meet a girl you're afraid they're gonna go and sell their story tomorrow, you know what I mean? It's just hassle.

Does that mean you're less secure in yourself?

It's really strange, actually. I can sit in front of a live TV camera no bother now, so my confidence has increased in some ways. But if you mean confidence with girls, it's gone way down. I used to have no fear in going up to a girl and talking to her - now I wouldn't have a clue what to say to her. That's a genuine example. Before, if I was put in a room with someone I didn't know, I'd be chatting away. Now I'm lost. These days I'm like 'what do I say here?'

But, in interviews you're quite outspoken. You're not afraid to say what you think then, are you?

I don't see any point in hiding what I think especially with something like the Spice - Westlife thing. The press were looking for bits and pieces to write about and so we gave it to them! We weren't trying to be controversial - just honest. If what we say comes out as impolite we're sorry, but on that day, that'll be the way we feel.

You've quite a wicked sense of humour, haven't you?

All kinds of things make me laugh. I find Robin Williams very funny and Eddie Murphy too. Comedy can be cruel sometimes. I don't mean to offend anyone. I prefer to have a laugh and keep things light.

What's most likely to make you angry?

If we're nearing the end of a really long day we can be tired and a bit cranky, especially when we hear we've another 22 hour day to follow. You have to remember how lucky you are to do what you're doing.

Do you think people have a realistic view of what Kian Egan is really like?

Not really. TV shows only show one side of our personalities. You see the funny side and the happy side and you don't get to see the hard working side or the quieter side. Off TV I'm more reserved, more likely to sit down, chill out, and I'm always at everybody to get things right. It's not quite that I'm a perfectionist, but I hate seeing things being done without enough effort. I'm quite a good organiser.

Are you happy?

I'm 90% happy. I've nothing to be sad or worried about, nothing to be afraid of. I have things in my life which are amazing for a 20 year old.

What would give you that extra 10%?

I dunno. You probably can't ever be 100% happy with your life. A holiday every now and then would be good. Days in the sun, with an open top car, having a cup of tea with me mam.

Are you working too hard?

I don't know. We do work hard. I don't know whether you'd call it too hard or not. Hours-wise we do an awful lot of hours in a week, too many, probably. But you get used to it. For example last year I had three weeks off at Christmas and I was so bored after two weeks I couldn't wait to get going again.

What are you looking forward to?

The tour. We're just going into rehearsals now, and they have a completely different vibe to everything else we've done. We're all very excited. It's a fresh way to start the year.
