Large Format Photography
Why large format photography?
The
negative size of a 35mm photo is about postage stamp size. All technical
progress is limited by this one factor. Large format photography starts with a
fifteen times larger negative. This will give you improved definition, tonal
range, sharpness and less grain. Essential where large sized prints are
desired. The other advantage is the adjustments and control possibilities of the
View-Camera. This allows you to create and compose a piece of art instead of
simply shooting a picture. There must be more to Photography than shooting pictures.
Large
Format starts with a negative size of 4 x 5 inches (102mm x 127mm, but the sizes are usually shown in inches). The standard sizes are 4 x 5, 5 x 7 and 8 x 10, 5 x 7 is less common. Some photographers use even larger formats.
Most
professional photographers, except when their line of work makes it unpractical
use large format. In recent times many serious amateur photographers are
starting or considering the large format. The higher costs of large format is
often a problem. Here are a few ideas on: How to start large format photography on a low budget
